I am trying to find out if the 914 transmission I have is made of Magnesium or Aluminum. I have to have my nose cone welded, if it aluminum I can welded or all the welding shops in my area can weld it if is the other not so easy.

There was an aluminum case for the 901 in the 1965-1969 911's. Partway through 1969 the 911 transmission was released and it was magnesium, as is the 914 transmission that was released conccurently with it. People often call the whole family of transmissions the 901 family but there are 3 distinct members to it, with there being both the side shift and the tail shift ones within the 914 grouping. You cannot take a 901 bellhousing from a 911 and put it into your 914. The middle section on the aluminum cases are different as are some other things. But the flipside is that your mag case is lighter.

I've got a sideshifter tailcone available if you are looking for one. PM me if you are interested in it...
