Post Brakes

The brakes on my 914 are locked up. Anyone have any idea how to free them?

Thanks

Front or rear? What have you done to them lately? Has the car been sitting awhile?

In the past I was able to free locked brakes with a big ass breaker bar on the lug nuts. In that particular instance I had a guy in the car letting the clutch out while I tryed to free the wheel. (It was a front wheel drive and the rear was locked). By the way, this method is extremly dangerous and I don't recommend you try it unless you are as imparied as I am. Remember....No Brain, No Pain!

I agree with the previous post though, why are they locked in the first place?

I went through this when my resto sat up for 6 months. Pull the wheels, the brake pads, and the calipers. You may have to use a screw driver and a hammer to tap the pads out. Using a vise or maybe vise grips, CAREFULLY push the plungers back to the return position. Take some WD40 and spray the plungers liberally and let them sit (plunger up) overnight. This should soften up any rust and let then slide to the return position. Reassemble (or complete your brake job while you are at it), bleed and re-bleed, and give them a try.

Now, with all that said, if your calipers need a rebuild (rotten seals, etc) the above is a waste of time. If not, this has worked for me on 2 different 914s.

Good luck.

I had a front left locking up and letting loose repeatedly. A buddy sugeested that the rubber section of brakeline occasionally comes apart inside. Sure enough, replacing them fixed it.
(It looked to me like a bad MC 'cause I couldn't get any fluid out of that side, so I got a new one of them, too. )

All 4. The 914 has been sitting for about 1 year. I pressed the break pedal to the floor to stop the car from rolling, and boy did that ever work.

Thanks for the advice, I'll try some of the ideas (I really like using big prybars on anything)...
