Post Bouncin' Tach Needle

If I rev the engine and hold it the tach needle bounces for awhile before it stabilizes. I have a limited understanding of gauges-needle attached to a coil that's sitting in a magnetic field, current through coil changes to position the needle...Is this problem repairable? Or does it have to do with a de-gaussed magnet or soemthing? Just wondering if anyone has any experience tweeking one of these guys...Thanks!

Common but not normal. I bought a NOS back before Pelican for $75, don't know how much they are know.

Call Wayne, they have a gauge rebuild service at PP, see what they can do.

Only other thing that 'might' cause it is if you have an aftermarket ignition system or points replacement. Try going back to points with a new condensor ($3.00 maybe) see if that does it.

My tach does this briefly during upshifts and I don't think that it's anything to worry about unless it's really bouncing wildly. You may try cleaning the contacts on the back of the tach, and on the distributor, that can't hurt.

I have the same problem with my tach, I've had it for about.....oh, 18 years now! I spoke with the people at Palo Alto Speedometer, they told me the cause is a broken damper - about $90 or so to fix. Pelican also offers this service, I'd use Pelican first!!!

$90, huh. I think I'll just have to live with it and judge by the sound for now!

Mine bounces wildly too. It did so before I switched to a pertronix pointless ignition, and after. Not a good thing when you shift near redline on a regular basis. I am serioulsly considering replacing the stock tach with a Auto Meter 8,000 rpm Monster Tach. I plan to upgrade to an MSD 6 box later, and eventually convert to a six. I have to figure out the turn signal and hi beam indicator, but I'm sure I'll do this eventually.
