To check the condition of the belt you will need a mirror and flashlight. Adjusting is easy...toward the front driver's side of the engine you will see a plastic oval plug in the sheet metal. There are two of these, one faces toward the outside of the car, one faces towards the front. Pull them both off. Now you can use a 13mm (I believe) socket to loosen the bolt that locks the alternator position from the front hole. The hole in the side allows you to pry the alternator in or out to tighten the belt. If you push the alt. all the way towards the engine, the belt will pop off. You tighten it such that it deflects about an inch under moderate thumb pressure placed between the pulleys.

Dont use a prybar etc. to 'adjust' the tension of your alternator belt. I've seen too many people wreck the bearings and alt. doing just that.
The weight of the alt. plus a little help from your hand should be enough. ------------------ CWP/VIR 72 914 L20E in rusto. 73 914 L20E 2.0L in resto. a914lover73@hotmail.com |
