Pulling strainer from inside the tank
Hi there. I'm just starting a restore of a '74 914/4 that has sat fr 18 years, with gas in the tank. :-(
How do I pull the strainer from the bottom of the tank? I unscrewed the nuts, but the fittings won't seem to pull out ?? and I don't want to use undo force.. Thanks |

You shouldn't have to use "undue" force, but you will definitely need "undo" force.
![]() The strainer is inserted through the hole in the bottom of the tank...same holes which the fittings are attached. After 18 yrs., you might have to whack 'em to loosen. Once removed, you should see an aluminum(?) ring which forms the base of the strainer. Pry this ring out and the strainer, or what's left of it, will follow. If this description doesn't make sense (as typical with my posts), look at the parts diagrams. It will be evident as to how everything comes apart. I have a useable tank (cheap) if you need one. |

sometimes using a sharp knife to go around the fitting at the point where they connect helps...this is the spot where the washer is located....give it a little tap as you go around...slow and easy....
