Question about added oil coolers
Looked at a used (well, they're all used, aren't they?) 914 today. Underneath the front trunk was - I'm guessing - an oil cooler. Seemed real exposed, like any kind of road debris could punch a hole into it. Is this common? Or maybe it's part of the A/C system? Going to talk to the owner more (didn't get to get inside and look around) but it looks like a great car otherwise. |

It could be either but AC is best guess. Look for compressor in engine compartment and for the under dash vents necessary for the system. If the car had a console and AC the console had to be a bit different to accomodate the under dash vents.

If a compressor was ever installed on your car one sure way to find out is to look at the engine shelf and tin ware in the corner under the battery. If a large rectangular section is missing or bent out of the way, a compressor was in there. I bought a car where some PO had used a oil cooler bypass, hooked it uo to the factory A/C lines, and put a cheap automatic transmission cooler up front.

Thanks for the tip - know I know what to look for! By the way, the current engine (2.0L) and all other "unnecessary" components will be pulled out of this car. If it is A/C, I'll post it up for sale on the 914 Parts 4 Sale BBS. Might be a pretty desirable option for folks down in the warmer climates! |
