5 bolt wheel modification
I'm new to this part of the Pelican forum, I usually hang on the 911 side of things.
Anyway, I am posting for my heighbor who recently received his Grandma's 1973 914 / 1.7. BTW, Grandma is still with us. I'm really sure there are numerous posting on this topic, but I wanted to see what was new and current on this topic. The car has been sitting since 1985, it is yellow w/browm interior. Real clean car, no issues that are not related to sitting for almost 15 years. Anyway, my neighbor wants to put a set of 5 bolt Fuchs on the car. I am going to donate a set of 1970 911T front struts and calipers to the project. The real question are the rears, what is the procedure there. What about the master cylinder ? Any other obious items needing attention ? Thanks, Woody |

Do some research, but I believe the easiest thing to do is have the rear hubs drilled for 5 bolt pattern, run a 19 mm master cylinder, and using your old T struts he should be good to go. I think the hubs from the 1970 1971 are made of thicker material and are the best to drill to the 5 bolt Porsche 130 mm pattern. 15 x 6 or 16 x 6 fuchs fit just fine. Jim

Jim is right re drilling the old hubs and rotors are the easiest. You can also look for some 914-6 parts to do the swap back there if you don't want parts redrilled. The other option is getting some older 911 stub axels and hubs.

Thanks guys for the information. An update, the car is cleaning up very nicely, my neighbor discovered Koni shocks hiding under multi layers of dirt and grime. We took the transmission to Akers in Seattle to solve the sticky shifting problem.
What's the deal with the calipers and rotors, you mentioned the 19mm master cylinder, do we go with the existing ? Try to adapt some 911 calipers and rotors ? Thanks, Woody |

The 914/6 used a 19mm master cylinder. It is larger than the standard 914. I would suggest you upgrade the master cylinder.
When you use the 911T front struts, you get the 5 bolt pattern and the brakes at that point should be adequate. The next upgrade would be to the 3.5" caliper spacing struts that gives you vented rotors and larger calipers "S" were the first 911 calipers that were state of the art all those years ago. The SC caliper is the same size, more reliable and is cast steel. Next upgrade would be the Carrera rotor it is thicker and caliper is designed for the wider rotor. Jim |
