What to look for

I am going to look at this car on Friday...

http://spokane.craigslist.org/cto/1292358095.html

I'm looking to get something I can work on with my boys, and hopefully drive around for fun at the same time. I'm gathering information from around here and doing my reaserch, just wondering if anyone can offer some tips.

What would be a good price to offer for the car.

Is it a good price?

Here is another one I want to look at, but I have not heard back...

Thanks for the assistance,

Cory

RUST - take an ice pick with you when you check out the cars. Poke around the battery box, front and rear trunks, suspension pickup points, jack plates, passenger compartment floor, around the pedal cluster.

Pretty much everything else you can fix. But terminal rust makes a 914 a huge money pit.

Regarding the first ad, 510 is the area code for Oakland and Berkeley, California. I wonder if the car is originally from that area..

In my opinion, the best way to check for rust in the suspension/ underside is to pay someone at a shop with a hoist $20 to put the car "up in the air" for a few minutes so you can get a good view of the entire underside of the car with a hand-held light. Note all of the rear suspension points, the area under the battery, and inside the side panels. Rust in those areas is particularly difficult to repair.

Test all the lights and electricals. A good test drive would be the South Hill Loop out the Palouse Hwy and down past the golf course; you'll get a good feel for the handling and the brakes. Then take it south on 195 for a few miles to get a feel for the car at highway speeds. If everything tests out okay, their asking price is very reasonable. Have fun!
