(Maybe) The last RX-7 oil cooler post ever

We can only hope, right. I just bought an RX-7 cooler (1990) off evil bay and it looks pretty good. It is this style:

I have a good idea on how to mount it but my question relates mainly to the oil pressure limiting device inside the housing.

Believe me, I have read at least 20 posts from over the last ten years having to do with these coolers so I understand the majority of the issues. My question is simply what is the device inside the cooler that looks like either a thermostat or a pressure relief valve?

The next question is: if I am running a Mocal thermostat is there any reason to keep this limiting device?

I've heard people call it a thermostat and that it needs to be removed from the cooler to avoid potential problems with it failing. Since I will be running an external thermostat I don't want redundancy.

The next question is: If it needs to come out do you simply discard the old thermo and bolt it all back together? I read some posts where they talk about removing it then tapping the internal passageway and then plugging it with a plug. This sounds like a lot of work.

Someone else said you have to cut the side of the tank off and re-weld the cooler back together. Pass on that..

SO, once again I come begging for help. Any info you have on this issue would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Rob

This is the offending part I am talking about:

There has to be someone who knows about disabling/bypassing this device, no?

Never mind, I figure it out from some more searching:

I was wondering since you didn't mention anything about it, what did you do with the thermostat/bypass in the cooler?

Thanks
Tom

It should be removed, and then a small bolt put in place. An M6 nut and bolt and some crush washers are all that are needed to block off the small hole.
