The 915 has the "normal" shifting pattern. It goes
135
24R

It is a little bit longer than the 901, and it can handle a little more power. It seems to be a bit stronger than the frail 901, and I think it has another internal support inside the case to make it better. Also, it has the ring gear backwards for a 914, because it was only used in the 911. This can be changed as well as getting a short case so you can use it in a 914. Not sure how much it would cost to do so, but I think rebuild 915's go for about 2200 or so from some companies not including core.

The short version--

The 915 is bigger, stronger, and heavier. It has the "normal" shift pattern. It is also much more difficult to set up in a 914--the ring and pinion has to be flipped, and you have to figure out a (tail-shifter) shift linkage of some kind or spring for the megabuck Vellios "916" kit.

If I was going to go through the hassel of installing a 911 tranny, I would install the G50 Tranny instead of the 915. I not sure if it has been done, but I would mount it upside down and have an oil pump to circulate the oil onto the top (bottom) of the case. Maybe one day, I will try this...
