Im pulling a 71 914 out of a 3 year storage, need help getting upto speed...
The title says it all, The car has been sitting for 3 years covered,Im getting it out of storage and need a check list of things to do before trying to start it, or turn it over, Please help, I have 4 days to get the car in running order and drive it from san fran to L.A. The car has a history of sputtering and dieing when running, cold or hot, the problem is intermittent and I think its the throttle switch regulator of the injector system, I've got till April 10 to decide which parts to get, but need suggestions.....im planing on checking the entire electrical and injector system, but would like a clean easy step by step,
Thanks in advance |

Look at the 914 club web site forum. I gave a list of what I think should be done after a car is stored, there are other opinions as well, of course mine is the only one that counts (ha-ha).
On the sputtering, replace the fuel filter ($5), and then see if there is a resister (black plastic enema looking thing near the CHT sensor) inline with the Cylinder Head Temp sensor. If there is take it out (remove it and plug the CHT directly into the harness) and see what happens. The next thing is to read the D-Jet article on the 914 fans web site, check the resistance of the CHT cold and warm. I had a similar problem of the motor dying when I accelerated after the motor warmed up, it was the resistor, but a bad CHT might do the same thing. Next check the injector FI points. As allways, if you think it is the FI system, check the ignition system first. So, look at the Haynes manual and go through the ignition spark, timing, and dwell. Then get the article (it might be on this site too, but I don't remember) off the 914 fans web site and go step by step through the FI. |
