				shift knob won't stay on

My GT clone has a brand new shift knob with a new crush sleeve. I believe I installed it correctly but it won't stay on. I slid the crush sleeve into the knob leaving about 1/8th of the sleeve sticking out. Lines it all up on the shifter shaft and pushed/lightly pounded it on. Looks like it's fully seated but with minimal effort it slides off. I've installed it several times with the same results. I'm ready to add a little RTV to hold in place. What am I doing wrong ?

Ummmm, I put it on the shaft at the top, put the knob over it and give a good whack with my palm. The crush washer should be up inside all the way....I've also put the washer inside and then installed the knob. Has worked both ways for me.
