Question Steering wheel and horn connection?

My car is a '74. On the back of the steering wheel the small post that the horn wire connects to is broken off. Has this happened to anyone else and is there a usual fix? I thought about drilling a small hole in the plate the post was part of and putting a small bolt through it and hold the wire on with a nut. Will it work???
Would soldering put this little tab back on?
Also, as the wire comes out of the column, does it go THROUGH the round hole (located at about 5 o'clock) on the center hub OR does it stay behind it and then gets clipped to post?
I took this all apart about 3 yrs ago. Can't remember how it was. Thanks for help.
