cal cooling conversion
aloha, i am building a 914 with a 2L built type 4 4 cyl motor. i came into a 911 style cal cooling shroud, alternator and strap, however, i can't figure out how i'm gonna put oil in this motor as the alternator sits on the old oil fill tower. what do i need?? thanks, geoff

I personally would not bother. The stock cooling system (in good working order) is plenty fine for any streetable 2-liter motor. The upright style is also a pain in the butt to install, as you are finding out.

sorry dave
aloha, i finished the cal cooling conversion and am VERY IMPRESSED with the far more stable operating temperature. the fill was wasy to rig as i just drilled and tapped a hole in the side of the alternator tower and set up a hose to an old brake fluid reservoir. i have 2 coolers, one with a fan in the engine compartment and one in the front fender well controlled by a thermastatic valve so warm up times are resonable. i live on the big island hawaii and temperatures here on the lava flows are high and had had isssues with it running hot. i'm running a highly modified 2litre (2180cc, around 160hp) so dave, i'll have to respectfully disagree with your opinion. cheers, geoff

I'd say Dave was correct to assume you were talking about a stock 2.0L. Disagreeing after the fact without providing important information to begin with is all too easy. Respectfully SmileWavy |
Isn't a 2180cc a T1 configuration?

what??
aloha sir andy, my query wasn't about whether i should run the cal conversion or not, it was how do i get oil into the engine. maybe you should have read my question. as to the bore and stroke, reccomended by my local vw guru, bear's racing. i'm not claiming to be an expert on type 4 performance, but this setup screams. cheers, geoff

Glad it's working for you! Though I suspect that having two coolers is doing more to help than the fan conversion. But if it works, it works!
I think I talked to you at a gas station on the Big Island a couple of years ago between Christmas and New Years. Is your car red? --DD |
911 uprights work worse than the stock fan. I imagine that the dual coolers are doing more as well.

That way, you might just get answers that better suit your expectations. SmileWavy |
How about some pics of the car /motor/ coolers etc?

Kid, did you paint the roof of the car in the past couple years? I think I just saw you out on the Kuakini Highway earlier today.... :)

to all
aloha dave , no that wasn't me. a few answers, my car was guards red before i flared the fenders and did the 911 front suspension and 5 lug conversion on the rear hubs(2yrs ago?) most now is in new black epoxy primer over bare metal except for the innerds (engine compatment, trunks, whick have a freshly sprayed black glassurit finish). i'm meaning to give it some nice livery soon. i'm off island for several months seduced by a financial opportunity. however, my 28yo son from arizona often visits my house, and he often drives some of my cars. i think he prefers my c2 now, but i wouldn't put it past him to take out the 14,( in fact i would be surprised if he didn't) as it's got a serious sort of primal seat of the pants feel when you go way too fast. i'll get pics out as soon as i'm home. cheers, geoff

hey dave
aloha dave, i know of at least 5 plus i saw a tangerine 914-6, or clone? parked in kailua-kona a year ago that i looked in the engine compartment and it was a carbureted six and the oil tank looked right. geoff
