Need Help on Braking

I am more confused than ever.

I have a 1972 914 that I am converting to a 914/6 with five lug. I am using a 2.7 or 3.0 ltr motor that will not be stock by any stretch of the imagination. The car will be 100% track for PCA and SCCA, DE and race events. Don't care about E-brake.

So the question, I am going to use the front suspension out of a 1983 911SC. I am not sure about the type of calipers, but I am buying the front and rear from the same car.

Is this going to be enough braking power for this car?

Should I use different calipers? 944S2, 930 Turbo, etc.....

Please help!!!!!! I want to besure that I only have to build this car once.

Hello There,

The 911SC brakes are more than adequate for what you're building the car for.

Make sure you're going to use the 19mm master cylinder and remove the brake proportioning valve and put a tee in it's place. (tee is stock on VW type 1s and type 2s)

I haven't experienced any rear brake lockup with this combo and I'm running bigger calipers on my 72'.

Good Luck,

You should be OK but with lots of track time you might want to go to the Carrera brake 84-89. They have thicker rotors part of the trick for braking is having a plce to dissapate the heat. That is where the rotors come in the bigger the rotor the heat has more surface to bleed off. Putting bigger calipers on SC rotors will just overheat the rotors and boil the fluid. So if the car is 100% track / DE go for bigger brakes and rotors.

I missed that you mentioned SCCA events in your first post and if you mean wheel to wheel (not auto-x) then they are terribly restrictive, at least here in CA they are. PCA seems to let you do anything and has a class to fit you into which is how it should be. Vintage groups are the same way and you have to stay with "period" modifications or what was legal back then. 930 brakes were not available so they aren't allowed and there are times when I wished they were on my race car. If you are going to go with really big brakes, I hope the race shop will really beef up the suspension points with reenforcement tubes/gussets as I have seen a couple of 914s with big brakes rip the rear consoles right out of the body with repeated hard braking stress. Good luck.

Check out the 911/914 tech article on brake cooling ducts for the front. This is the setup that I use for my 914-6 3.2
