How to tell 2.0 from 1.7/1.8
I used to know this, but my memory is fuzzy.
Looking at a GA engine with 4 studs holding the intake on. I thought GA was a 2.0, but 4 studs meant not 2.0. What's the deal? Thanks |
you've got it right.
Probably a GA case (2.0) with some 1.7 or 1.8L heads.... |
Valve cover off - look for the casting number - 1.7 will start with "021" and 1.8 will start with "029" if my memory is correct.
2.0 heads are 3 stud (Porsche), start with "039". 2.0 VW heads may have 4 studs and I do not know casting number (I would have to consult my bible = Wislon) |
It's probably a 2.0 L VW motor out of a 76 or later van. My 76 has the GA prefix. It is a late production 76 and VW may have been using up the GA Blocks. Good luck!

Here are two links for engine codes...note that the GA is a 914...there is a CA for a bus...
