![]() ![]() number 41 is a diode that regulates the handbrake lever, and the warning switch in the master cylinder, with it in place activating my park brake or letting my m.c. run dry will not engage my warning light, if i bypass it and run it to a ground the light will come on very bright for a second or two before dimming considerably and then a humm will start under my dash(i have found the humm to be my flasher module, it works perfectly for all the other functions (hazards ect...) but fails to flash my brake warning light. so i defiantly need this diode number 41 right??? and if so where on earth do i find one. ????? i have it in front of me and the only numbers on it are 41806 if anyone knows what resistance i need i can go to radio shack pick up the parts and make me one ![]() |

Use a 1N4001 diode from Radio Shack.

so i went to radio shack, bought 2 1n4001 diodes for 99.$, soldered up a wire with the diode in the correct direction. tried it... and it is doing the same thing as it did before. clicks on stays bright for a second then dies down and my flasher relay humms. if i activate my flasher or hazards it will flash flawlessly, and as bright as it should be. so do i just need a different diode, or a resistor to use with my diode or what??... I am truly without a clue

Does the flasher work properly when you use the turn signals ? I had this happen once too. Pulled the gauge, removed the brake/mc light and tested the voltage coming from the flasher. Turned out to be a bad connection.....

here is whats going on
the turn signals work perfect, as do the hazards,
the only problem is the brake warning light in my combo gauge don't blink, it lights up perfect for about 1 second then gets dim still visible but not half as bright as it should be and once it goes dim my flasher relay buzzes and it will stay like this until the parking brake lever is released now if i pull my hand brake lever and then engage any other function that uses my flasher it works flawlessly, eg. (pull the park brake lever, and activate the hazard lights everything works as it should) if i pull the hand brake lever, and activate a turn signal again everything works perfect, but if i where to leave the park brake lever pulled up and turn off the blinker the light will stay bright for about a second and then grow dim again and the flasher relay will again start to buzz and not blink all of this leads me to believe that my flasher relay is in good working order but i have a problem else where ... any further questions or answers would be nice thanks so much George ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Just a WAG
Try this, unplug the SeatBeltWarning lamp assy and see if this stops your problem you may have a false ground on one of the yellow lead coming out of the seat belt latches or a bad Seat Belt Warning lamp assy. |

The E brake switch works by grounding, the switch can get pretty rusty maybe to much resistance because of the condition of the Ebrake switch.

Is your flasher unit an original 914 item or an aftermarket 'one size fits all' replacement? When earthed thru the 2w warning lamp bulb, an original one will flash at the proper interval - a 'universal' one will give the symptoms you describe. BTDT.

flasher relay
the one in my car went bad so i replaced it with the one from my parts car. a 74 2.0 i assumed they where the same but the numbers on the plastic case where different, it worked my blinkers so i put it in my car... so i am assuming that the one from my parts car was a generic and that i need to buy a good Porsche one?

Maybe. The original items seem to have this unusual feature that they will flash that 2w bulb on its own: the generic ones don't like it, they try to turn it on & off many times a second, which is why they buzz and the light is dim. Turn on flashers or hazards & now they've got the load they expect, so they suddenly behave themselves.
Had it myself with a new h/d Hella item: got fed up with the buzzing after a year or so & stuck an original 914 one back in. All back to normal. They're easy enough to swap: can u borrow a known good one just to check? |

![]() i have unplugged my seat belt warning system and still the problem persists so it looks like i get to buy a new flasher relay... so i have one last question, if i where to buy the one that pelican has, would it work my brake warning light correctly. it is hella but it doesn't look like my original... or should i look around the web for a used original??? |

What's the part number for the original. I have a bunch of assorted relays from parts cars and such. If I have it, It's yours.

i can't remember the part number from my original, and like an idiot i discarded the old one without a second thought once i saw the new (one from my other car) one work my blinkers,
it is a 73' 1.7 i don't know the number i have looked about but cant find it anywhere... i am horribly sorry for being such a nuisance but i want my car to work with all the bells and whistles like it did new from the factory, i am moderately mechanically inclined but i keep running into problems ![]() |

I am booked solid till sometime Sunday. I'll look in my containers and pull all the relays I have. We might get lucky still.

FWIW my original one that works properly has the following:
Hella TBB 264 DB 002 479-01 2(4)x21w - 12v As for the Pelican ones - dunno. From what I can see off the site, they have different coding although a similar format. Maybe things have been superseded over the last 40 years. |

solution
i wound up putting a 10 watt resistor in parallel to the bulb, it now draws enough power to activate my flasher relay properly, thanks for all of your help George
