914World.com - A Porsche 914 Community / Forum / Club

I'm not usually one to cross link to other sites but this is just plain exciting to me...

some thought went into this one, but at the end of the day, the guy is trading an older chassis design that suffers from improper rear control arm geometry and a lot of money when he could just buy a boxster and throw a 3.6 in it.

i appreciate the challenge and if he is looking to showcase his skills kudos on that.
imho, keeping a 914 look with the better/faster drivetrain would have had more of a fun factor than having the GT3 boxster style. yeah, i know, just my 1.5 cents worth

we are storing a boxster GT3 look 3.8 zytek motored 914 at our shop, and other than the better aero for the track, it was big wasted $$

Well, the counterpoint is this is actually a pretty cheap way to performance. Subaru engines can be had all day long for $1000-1500. Try rebuilding a 914 Type IV for that? Try matching the power for twice the money and you still come up short.

Boxster/Cayman 5 spd boxes can be bought out of LAPD as good low mileage takeouts for $1500. That's in the same ballpark as rebuilding a 901 properly if it needs a 1/R op sleeve and some dog teeth. It's way cheaper than a Wevo or Velios 916 conversion.

So then what you are really left with is the cost of the conversion and the "kit" for installation. A couple thousand dollars more? Where does that put us overall? $5000-6000. That's what a 6 swap costs in a 914 and you are still left with a 901 based bearbox at that price.

The comment about just throwing a 3.6 in a Boxster really doesn't have anything to do with it in my mind. I could build a faster better handling VR6 powered Golf for the same money, but it doesn't mean I would want one. I don't ever expect my 914 to be able to run with my other cars. But I do want to pull it's powertrain out of the '70s and make it drive like it's 10 or 15 years old instead of 35.

The SCCA still uses the absurd 1.4 multiplier for forced induction, so if you can't beat em'......
It looks as tho the ****box is gonna get a Subi motor. The 2 valve motor no longer cuts the mustard when going up against the big dogs with mega horsepower in XP. The Subie also has a weight advantage over the flat 6 but has a similar CG.
350 hp @ the wheels is doable with the 2.0L. An increase in traction will be necessary. The 2.5L is also a possibility but then E Mod becomes the class.

BTW, Dave, we're still waiting for Doug's green meanie to see what he's got for us. If any 9eleben can run with the box ( bad geometry & all) , with Doug's driving , he may be the one.
