CA Historical Plates....finally got them.
FWIW....I applied for a set of plates in December of last year. Got a LOT of grief from the knuckle draggers at the DMV......they said that my Porsche did not meet the description of a Historical Vehicle.
The three requirements were..... 1) 25 years old 2) made AFTER 1922 3) Is of Historical Interest The first two weren't too hard, even the 1/2 wits there could figure it out. But number three stumped them. Waaahhhhl, I don't think a Peooorshuh is of any interest to us here at DMV......hyuk.......... I told them that it was to me....take my money and submit my application. 45 days later I got them. Neat little tidbit.....if a CA car has Historical Plates it looks like that they are smog exempt even if they are NOT pre 73....one other thing. There is no description of a "Historical Vehicle". So it could be a 25 year YUGO as far the rules go.

In Nevada we are eligible for a Classic Car plate. I have not confirmed yet but I believe it also makes them smog exempt.

After the plate is "bought"....a $2.00 per yer fee is charged, and no smog inspection....that's what the reg reads.

Florida has a plate stating "Collectible" which only requires the vehicle be 25-years-old and older.
After seeing them on a clapped-out Plymouth Duster and hanging sideways off the bumper/frame of a Chevy pick-up, I decided to order a personalized plate instead: "ROUSER-S" The "S" is just a hollow tribute to the "unofficial" designation of the 1973 914 as an "S", ergo 914S. I'm nitpicking, right? ![]()

I am pretty sure that the car has to be previously registered to YOU to be exempt from the smog test....don't know. Otherwise, 27.00 bucks got me mine. I had to run around with those pink stickers in the window for awhile like all the trailer trash....

MIKEZ... Doesn't the historic plate limit your ability to drive your car other than parades or similar events? I know that this is really not a big deal, but if you ever get stopped by a motor-cop who is by the book and you are not doing any activity that the plate allows, you may be cited...
Anyways, I think your historic plates are pretty COOL! Here's the link to the DMV regarding the rules. http://www.lightner.net/ybdb/dmv.html

In Kentucky, you pay a one time fee, around 50 bucks I think, and you get a Historic Motor Vehicle Plate. Car must be at least 25 years old and thats the only requirement. No waiting for an application to be approved, no restriction on driving it, no renewal or property taxes from there on till the end of time. And we don't know what smog is out here.
