Oil Level in Case of Dry Sumped Engine?

My race car engine is dry sumped and does not have the dip stick tube since a 911 alt/fan is now mounted on top. The scavange pump suction connects to the regular case sump cover. Does anyone have a way to check what the level of the oil is INSIDE THE CASE when the engine is running?

Hello

Who cares the engineoillevel in the sump while runing ?

You need enough oil in the oiltank.

Well, not exactly true, since if oil level gets too high then it can go up the barrels, especially on a car that corners with slicks and the motor can become a large oil pump. I am thinking the two stage pump may not be enough, I.E. only one suction on the sump cover? At idle it is cleaning the sump well as the oil coming back into the tank is pretty aireated. I may have to adapt a level meter such as on 911s to my dry sump tank?

Hello

UH the oillevel in the engine is definatet by the pumprate and normaly your suctionpump is 50 to 100% higher in rate then the pressurepump. The pump has no problem to suck air as it not have to pressure feed the bearings. The oiltank needs only volume to refilll but not pressure.
A other thing is that your oilevel in the system and not runing engine will normaly be similar in hight as the oil follows gravity. ( sooner or later ).

A other thing is that your type 4 engine was basically constructet to run with 3 quarts oil in the sump and this will not hurt to much so even if you have a eaqual splitet pump and the similar level the benefit is the larger oilvolume and cooling surface plus enough spare oil to pressure the engine if you drive very long sweping curves the where 914 with normal oillevel will show the oillight due starving feed.

The 911 engine is constructet to run without engine sump and so a overfill there will hurt much more.

Grüsse
