2nd Set of Speakers

I just picked up a set of Jensen Coaxials built into some original housings. The stereo in my car can handle front and rear speakers, so I am looking for ideas about how and where to mount them. Ideas?

adding speakers

when my car came from Germany back in 1976 it had a 2nd pair of oval 5x7 speakers cleanly mounted in the vinyl sides of the backpad just outboard of the seats - worked well - looked "factory" since they pulled down into the foam and fit tightly into the vinyl

- but ya can't be anal about "original" if ya go there

i later removed the 1970 backpad, installed a late back & late seat so i could fit an autopower rollbar and retractable belts - the rollbar would not permit having speakers in that side location anymore

so I just cut out the grills from my front speakers and put in big round powerful Blaupunkts

none of that is original either - so I guess i'll never try to enter the Parade Concours

imho, some days we porsche guys get way to uptight about "concours original" and it gets in the way of improvements - i got a reminder of that 2 weeks ago at a custom rod event - there was not a single car among 400 that even came close to "original" - those street rod guys know how to have fun

Rear speaker mounting locations

I have successfully mounted speakers on the underside of the roll bar...initially I used a small tweeter and midrange "surface mount" speaker set attached to a metal "L" shaped bracket I fabricated (this was later replaced with just a set of tweeters). The bracket was attached to the underside of the rollbar with small sheet metal screws (screwed directly into the "padded" portion). If they are placed in the upper corners they will not interfere with the rear view and with the exception of some small holes made in the material lining the underside of the rollbar you are not doing anything too radical to the interior. Wires can be routed under the threshold carpet, under the backpad and in the seam between the rear window and the rollbar. In the small cockpit of the 914 this combination of rear and front speakers is very effective. I also have a small subwoofer installed...but that's another story!

an alternative - get some Miata headrest midrange speakers - about $80 for a set of 4 on eBay - they can be mounted in mighty tiny places
