Cylinder shimming
I have been doing a lot of research for my upcoming project of installing 96mm pistons. I have a few questions that I hope y'all can answer.
I am planning on using the KB 96mm cast pistons with the 24mm wrist pin and my stock T-IV rods. No stroking planned (unfortunately). If I read correctly, it seems that i might have to shim behind the cylinder jug to keep the piston the correct distance from the internals of the head. Is this correct? I keep reading about "Torque Plate" boring to open up the cyls. I assume that a machine shop will know what I'm talking about. If they don't, I should walk away. Just for my own knowledge, what is torque plate boring? The more I read about this project, the more complicated it seems to be. I was kinda hoping for a "plug-and-play" type of project. You know, just remove the old and reinstall the new. I am not deterred, just want to know all the facts before getting into it. Jake, if you can post your "MUSTANG..." story on this board, I'm sure the members would love to read it. Many thanks to those who have pointed me in the right directions so far. Looking forward to more information. Thanks Pritchard '74 2.0L |
Pritchard,
Torque plate honing requires a special fixture made just for the cylinder that you are working with. Most NON TIV shops would not have this.. If you want box it al up and shoot it my way for the service.. I don't wanna post the Mustang story over here, somebody would probably gripe at me. |
