Collector Vehicle Insurance
I’m getting ready to finally roll my 1973 2.0 out of garage and get her on the road. (as soon as this snow goes away!) Since, up to this point, the car has been comprised mostly of many individual pieces, I have not had the need to have it insured.
Now, since I work in Manhattan and commute by train I don’t drive that often. And, since I have two other vehicles, the 914 will be used only occasionally (shows, meets, etc.). I’ve started to look into getting “collector vehicle insurance” for the 914. The rates that I am getting are extremely attractive. But, I have a few questions for the group.

Does anyone have any experience with this type of coverage?
Is there anything that I should look out for?
Any companies that you would recommend?
Any companies that I should avoid?
Thanks |

Insurance
I went through the same thing. I have collector car insurance. I pay $412 per year for my 914/6. I have insured it for $30,000.00
all I had to do was show them proof that that I had other cars insured and send them pictures of my car. The name of the company is "Hagarty Insurance" Good luck. ![]() |

Try J.C. Taylor as well. I have two restored Volkswagen beetles insured. One day we drove through some paint that was spilled on the road. Undercarriage and wheel wells ( painted...no undercoating) were splatter and dry before we knew it. We submitted a claim for the clean up and was approved... The cars have to be registered as historic or classic vehicles and will have some sort of mileage restriction no doubt.

I insure my 914 with Hagarty Insurance also. I think they require that it be garaged. You give them the annual mileage driven and declared value. Their rates are very reasonable, much less than Geico who I previously used. Check it out, it may save you some money.

I pay around $340/year for my 911SC from Leland-West. For full coverage. Its a collector policy, needs to be garaged and less than 5000 miles per year.
A 914 would be significantly less. They advertise in Panorama and Excellence. |

I have 3 cars, a 914 and 2 Healeys, insured through J.C. Taylor via my local agent. Rules are simple - Submit copy of proof of membership in any car club, i.e. membership card; submit copy of title; submit photo(s) of vehicle. Under this insurance, the vehicle is supposed to be driven for club events, i.e. to and from meets, shows, parades, etc. It is also allowed to be driven for normal exercise of the vehicle. There is a 1200 mile limit for driving but this rule is flexible because many drive to and from national events.
Rates for Texas run $50 to $60 per car for full coverage - liability, comprehensive, collision. And they do stand behind the policy.. a member of my Healey club had his car just a short time when he was T-boned.. put him in the hospital for a couple of days, seemed to have totaled his car. The insurance payed for full restoration.. when he got the car back it was in better shape than before the accident. |

Check the Fine Print
Be sure to check the fine print on some of these policies. They are usually bargain prices for a reason.
Last time I investigated a couple of the major companies, they had strict prohibitions against driving the car to work or on errands (!), even on an ocassional basis and regardless of length of trip or location of destination. Personally, I really don't like somebody telling me I can't drive my car to the office or the store on a sunny day.
