Any way to tell size of Torsion/Sway bars?

I am planning on doing some susupension upgrades soon, but since I don't know the whole history of the car I figure I ought to find out what is in there first.

I need to pull things apart to put new bushings in anyway...is there any way to tell what size the front sway bar is and the front torsion bars?

I am guessing the torsion bars are stock, but don't know about the sway bar.

Thanks for the help,

Tony

When in doubt, measure
Be sure to measure the body of the bar itself, not the splined areas. You can reach the sway bar in place by reaching under the car, but the torsion bars must be removed before you can get to the area where you can make your measurements.

To measure the easy way take your open-end wrench and see if it slides over the torsion bar. They become go/no go gauges.

Question Big bars

I recieved a large front sway bar from a friend. It looks like a weltmiester and has adjustable drop links but measures 29mm
in diameter. I'm pretty sure it is hollow. Does any one know what it is or used one this heavy? I also hve a stock one and can't decide which one to use. Any ifo would be helpful.

Hmm. The Weltmeister bars for 914's listed in the Performance catalog are 19 and 22 mm in diameter and I think they're solid.

The Weltmeister bars for 924's and 944's are 28 mm - maybe that's what you have.

It might fit my beast

I also have a 78 928 that has a 28MM stock bar. I think we might be interested if you want to get rid of it ( the beast & me). Hollow cool, saves wieght cooler, most likely stiffer Oh yeah I need this.
