Stupid question

Hi, I do about 5 min of driving everyday at idle or slower and I just hate having to sit with the clutch in and just thinking about the TO bearing and such. Also I don't want to be constantly feathering the clutch. I'm looking at getting a 914 but I need to know how fast they go at idle. Any help would be greatly apreciated.

I'm sure that the answer you want is going to differ from car to car. There is not much torque in these cars, so IMO the clutch is really easy in traffic and hills. You used to have to fight my car to make it stall, it would cough and hack, but the sucker wanted to keep running. I taught several people to drive stick in that car because of that.

Jrboulder,

I'm with Infraedcalvin on this. I've done roughly the same commute in the south bay area for a few years now in several different cars. Any manual shifted car is more work, and you have to pay more attention to it as you get into the poorer traffic flows. For a couple of years, I did it with a 73 2.0 914 -- no issues what so ever. A 5 gear tranny, and 1st is sufficiently low that if traffic is moving at all, you can usually chug along with it. I'm currently doing it with a 76 turbo carrera (as my commute car is in the shop) -- not quite so easy as it's a 4 gear, with a fairly high 1st. Still managable tho -- and as Pat said, every car is different on this. (certainly, an automatic tranny is best for sitting in very heavy traffic -- turn up the music and do the "wait time" to move forward)

hth,

kim.

Sorry to hijack, Kim, nice choice in 930s, not too many turbo carreras around...

Thanks guys for the replies!
I just don't want to be off and on the clutch over and over again.
The traffic always goes at a speed just under what my 944 will idle at.
I think I might just get a 914...

Agreed! Seeing your post actually motivated me to post

It's been fun commuting in it -- as you say, not too many around and any other p-car folks usually know it too. Lots of thumbs up!
