Riviera tire suggestions?

Anybody have some suggetsions for a 15" tire that will work well with a stock body and riviera wheels? I'd like to get some decent performance under $400. I'd rather hear it from you guys than the tire store.

Kurt

Kumho ECSTA Supra 712

size 195/55/15....64 a piece at tire rack

205/55 is another choce, but it depends on your rims....some Rivieras allow wider tires than others

I'm running these tires on my car and so far I really like them.
(205/50/16's on 7" Phonedials)

Porsche or VW Rivs?

Here's the reason I ask.

There are a couple of different Riviera style wheels out there. There are some that were manufactured with the correct offset and clearances for the 914 but the vast majority I have encountered are VW spec wheels.

If yours are the VW spec kind, you may very likely only be able to get 165x15 tires to fit under the rear wheel well. My crappy parts car almost rubs the tire shoulder against the fender (about a sheet of paper's clearance!) These are the VW spec wheels. I have a friend who has 195s on his Rivieras with a good metric finger's width of space left for more tire. He could go with 205s and still have them fit.

What does that have to do with your question? Well, not all tires are manufactured in all sizes. My choice would be Yokohama AVS but I don't believe they will come in a 165 aspect ratio. If you can fit 195s or 205s the Yokos get my vote!

Good luck

Heck, play your cards right and you might find 'em all for under $300.

Assuming a 195/60HR-15 size (I don't know if you can push Rivieras to 205's) ... maybe some Generals, Toyos, Yokohamas, Continentals? My current Michelin Pilots XGT H4's are great, but I shouldn't have had to break my bank for that same level of performance; won't make THAT mistake again.

BFGoodrich has a Touring T/A HR4 that one friend says has a nice ride and handle well, while another is swearing by his 205 Toyo's. I'm talking daily/semi-daily drivers here; the feel in the butt is just as important as the feel in the palms.

OK. I just did what I should have done before I posted this. I looked at the existing rims. I believe I have the bug style rivieras. The rear tires are 165's and there is barely a finger's width clearance. The fronts have plenty of clearance.

I think my decision will be to put another set of 165's on there. They are cheap. Eventually, I'll upgrade the rims. I feel like a little kid whose candy has just been pilfered by the previous 914 owner.

Thanks for the inputs

My recommendation...ditch the Rivieras and get some Fuchs or Mahles.

Sorry, you asked I just don't like the Riv's.

Then, get some 205/50 or 195/60 Kumho ECSTA 712's, or something comparable, assuming it is a street car. Keep in mind that every tire you can get these days is WAY higher-tech and stickier than anything made 25-30 years ago! Even with a stock 914 suspension (in good shape) and a modern tire from any of the major brands, you will be in go-kart heaven.
