steering wheel spline

Is the 914 steering shaft spline the same as some or all 911's?
Thanks. Enjoy the info here.

Actually it is, but the compatibility is kind of bizzare. My 73 914/4 had a 78-83 911SC steering wheel on it when I bought it. Bolted right up. But, the early 911's (i.e. the same year as the 914) are supposedly NOT compatible with the 914/4, but IIRC they are with the 914/6. Go figure. Different steering columns. Also I think the 911 Carrera RS and 914/6 steering wheels are the same or interchangeable at least. Smaller diameter than the big "school bus" wheel on the regular early 911.

A very confusing subject.

Personally I hate the stock steering wheels anyway. Momo for me.

I know for a fact that the same steering wheel is used on the 911 and the 914. Identical splines. The column is quite different, but they are splined the same, and the wheel IS the same. The 914 /4 wheel has a plastic spacer added to the back of it to provide a place to mount the VW horn electrical contact ring/turn signal cancel cam. If you remove this, the wheel will bolt up to a 911. I have already done this!

There are picts of the whole thing on my web site, under the steering column section.

If they are the same how come I need an adapter to place a 930S wheel on it.
I was under the impression that the 914 had less splines on the shaft but i dont know this to be true.
I have a 74 and I know that the 930S wheel doesnt fit directly.

Interesting. What Clay says makes sense. The early 911's (and maybe the 914/6's???) have that "clamshell" steering column and their steering wheel hubs are designed to mate up flush with that. The later 914/4 and later 911 doesn't have the clamshell thing. So technically I guess it's not really the splines that dictate the compatibility, it's the shape & spacing of the hub itself.

I bought a wheel from a 74 -4 and after I removed the hub it fit fine on my -6, except once the hub was removed there was no where to mount the turn signal reset ring. On -4's the reset ring is obviously mounted on the hub, but on a 911 or -6 the back of the steering wheel has a channel ground out of it so the reset ring can sit flush with the back of the steering wheel. Has anyone else found this, or was the steering wheel I bought an exception?

In addition, I'm not sure that a 911 steering wheeel would have the correct screw holes to mount the hub from a -4 steering wheel.

Here is a pic showing the channel on the back of a 911 steering wheel:

The wheels that I have seen in the past only have the screw holes in the wrong place. Otherwise they are the same. You can interchange them with ease. Just redrill and tap the screw holes.

I never saw the recess for the turn signal cam, and I have done this before.

My dad's 73 RS came with a Fittapaldi wheel. When he replaced it with the original wheel, the Fittapaldi ended up on my 75 914. The spline is the same profile, but the turn signal cancel cam does not turn off the signals. There is also a gap between the back of the wheel and the front of the column shroud. Not a problem on a track car though.
