2.0L engine verification

I am looking at a 2.0L 914 engine this weekend and would like to know how I can tell if it's a true 914 type 4 2.0L.

Is the engine vin the only way?

The engine is out of the car and has the D-jet FI. It was pulled to do a /6 conversion. It sounds like oil leaks are the biggest problem.

Anything to watch for? I will not be able to start it.

Thanks

For the case a prefix of GA (73-74) or GC (75-76), but any size engine can be built with any case. For the heads, if they have 3 studs to mount the intake manifolds then they are 2.0 heads but if they have 4 studs they are either 1.7 or 1.8 heads. The 1.8 heads can be used to build a 2.0 or even larger engine. So I'd say if the case number and the heads are both 2.0 then you probably do have a 2.0 engine. I have a 1.7 case with 2.0 heads but have now idea what is inside the case so I'm building a new engine myself just so I know exactly what I'll have. Hope this helps.

If I remember right the location of the numbers on the case is different for different engines. The 1.7 is by the oil filler and the 2.0 is somewhere else. I'm at work so I don't have my Haynes manual to look it up. Wait a little bit and Dave D. will be able to answer this for sure.

on a GA or GC engine case, the engine ## is by the oil filler, tucked down on a horizontal surface between the "tower" that the oil filler stuff is and the fan housing

The 1.7 & 1.8 case will have the sn# on a rib, on the top of the engine case, near the trans mount, right hand side looking at the engine from the rear. Will start with " W, EA, EB,EC, etc".

Pop a valve cover, there should be a casting number "039 101 271 A" cast into the head (2.0 liter). 1.7 is 021 and 1.8 is 029.

If it is a VW 2.0 head, you will have 4 manifold studs (as I remember).
