Great Idea. I'm in.
|
Yeah Wayne I'm in. Please include atleast the 73 color electrical diagram in a 2 page fold out. That would help alot even to the beginners.

I'd buy it. I would really like to see carbed cars addressed in it's more complete version, though. Too much of this site just thumbs its nose at carbed 914's, even though in the "real world" a significant percentage of the remaining running 914's have been converted to carbs, and most done poorly, and expert advice in this direction would be helpful, even if you had to farm that part out to someone else. It's not that I'd reccommend carbing one of these, but on many otherwise nice cars, it's been done, and you have to deal with that to drive it ( or convert back, which is sometimes even less practical).SmileWavy

Count me in Wayne, Ill soon have a nice collection of your books

Additional topics that come to mind... Some of these may be in your list... And many are on the website already. I'll just do some stream of consciousness thinking here... Removing, adjusting, and reinstalling frunt trunk, rear trunk, and engine lids... Removing and refurbishing trailing arms (bearing install, bushing replacement, all about the shims) Shift linkage improvements (bushings, adjustment, etc.). Rebuilding front and rear brakes Fuel tank refurbishment General electrical troubleshooting techniques (checklist of things to check... fuses, tranny ground strap, coil connections, arching of spark plug wires, relays, etc.) Resealing front and rear windows Side window alignment Door handle repair and adjustment Installing an aftermarket (i.e., Momo or Sparco) steering wheel and connecting the horn. Converting to European front turn signals Improving lighting (gauges, replacing bulbs, cleaning contacts, upgrading to higher output headlights and foglights (high voltage relay) Upholstery refurbishment (replacement, repair) Troubleshooting the heater/blower system (corroded contact in the switch control, heater flapper box wires, fuses, heat exchanger connections). Have Jake Raby write a section on increasing engine output (FI mods, vs carbs, hotter cams, headwork, etc.) Seatbelt upgrades (hey you can stick 944 belts in the car), refurbishment of existing hardware. Installing new carpet in your 914 Installing an external oil cooler (4s and 6s) Installing new weatherseals! (Tips and tricks) I can think of more if you need more! |
I think that this sounds too good to be true. Let me give you my two cents worth as a newbee to 914's (and mechanics in general)
It has been said before but if you are going to go one way or another err on the side of simplicity verses us expecting to know what you are talking about. RDVNAC said it the best "One suggestion: err on the side of oversimplfying or overclarifying, rather than assuming lots of knowledge in the reader. The experienced wrenches don't need books like these; we beginners do. I also think that this should be in depth and complete even at the risk of less material. I liked the idea of starting a series if this goes well. I already have 101 projects for my baby and i have only had it 8 months! 202 think about adding books later indepth about possibly Fuel systems- Carbs and fuel injection as a seperate book this would give the topic the amount of attention that it really needs to be complete. and can be added later as a second edition. Still talk about FI and Carbs but give it the real attention that it needs in another book. this is just one other book that could be in this series. just a thought. put me down for a copy! You guys do this stuff so well i dont doubt that it will be good. well that was alittle more than two cents but i guess you guys just have to deal with it :) |
Great idea and way over due. Looking forward to something new to read on the breed. Thanks.

Oh come on... instead of 30, convince 'em to make it 101. Heck, you've got 30 of them most common thing already on the website... Why not fill the gaps? I'm sure you could do a prepublish request (like the posting you did) and show the publishers the interest it could generate. I'm sure there are people willing to write additional tech articles. I'd be willing to write a few just for my name being recognized in the book. Heck, I'd still expect to have to buy a copy. Post a request for topics and see what kind of response you get... Here are some ideas on the chapter/section breakdowns that I came up with. I know you are limited to space, words, time. But why not make it complete? Do it right the first time. With the exception of the Haynes manual, a really good DIY book isn't available for the 914. Put me on the your list. (Or at least put it in the on-line catalog when its ready!) Word of a book like that would travel through the "914 underground" like wildfire and it would sell very well I'm sure.

Go for it Wayne!
Just 2 suggestions come to mind; 1. Include a 914 buyers checklist 2. Remember years ago there use to be a spec book out; 2 1/2 x 4 inches or so on the 914. So, including some of those specific torque specs etc. would be quite helpfull. |
Great book idea (did you really have to do the 101 Projects for 911 *first*?).
I vote for an electrical section that has the pin-outs for connections to the relay board (engine) and fuse panel. ... and color codes for wires if you have the space. Another nice bonus in the conversion section would be some ideas for wiring the -6 up (although you can figure it out yourself, given enough time and beer :D ) |
101 914
I would buy one as well! Let us know if/when it becomes available.
|
ABSOLUTELY, I'd buy two. I currently print out articles from this site all the time, it would be nice to have them bound. That price allows for one in the house and one in the garage. Thanks, Dave!
