Mittelmotor Exhaust and Flares
Two recurring topics are mufflers and flares. I wanted to mention that I just received both from Mittlemotor.
The muffler is very nice, excellent quality and finish. Very solid with beautiful welds. The fit was very good. I've driven my car with it only once so I am still forming an opinion on the sound. I replaced a Bursch quiet with it so that is my comparison. At full throttle it sounds very good, no louder than the Bursch, but smoother sounding. It is definately different at part throttle and idle, but I haven't driven it enough to have a good opinion or discription yet. The price was 396 Euro$ which at 1.142 Euro$/US$ equals $346. The flares are steel, painted satin black, with Porsche part number stickers. The price was 207 Euro per flare which equals $181 or $724 for the set (front and rears, left and right). These will be rewrapped and stored for future use. The shipping from Germany for these parts was about $80. The package was delivered to the USPS post office. There was a fairly long wait, I think for the muffler. It took about three months total, but I told them that they could hold the order and ship everything together. They notified me when the order was received and when it was shipped. It took about 3-4 weeks shipping time. The two people I dealt with via e-mail with were Michael and Magdalene, both spoke English and were very nice and helpful. So, there is an alternate source for steel flares at a price below the current prices advertised in the US. If you want a set I recommend Mittelmotor. I'll post more about the muffler when I put some miles on it. Mike |

So, that bolts right up to 2.0L headers? Nice. I think my OEM 2.0L muffler, while looking good, is about 1 billion years old. Pretty good upgrade.

Mike, Thanks for posting the photos. I don't have a digital camera so I wouldn't be able to do so.
Frog, They do have a website, but the flares are not pictured. I'd be glad to loan you my flares for your measurements but I'm on the east coast. Their site is: www.mittelmotor.com Mike Last edited by maf 914; 02-13-2002 at 04:47 AM.. |

Yes I found the web site for Mittelmotors. Thanks several people had brought up the subject before of "What happened to the Porsche dies for the GT Flares" Well I think they have been found. I contacted Mittelmotors and found out that they have plenty of the flares. They didn't say they had the dies. But if they don't then they know who does! And at the price they will sell them for then I don't really think there is much chance that I can build them any cheaper. So far I have proven that I can build a streach forming machine and produce limited runs of parts that turn out pretty good. I have learned alot along the way. One of the things I have learned is that I could produce the flares, No problem. But there is no way I could produce them for 500.00 as I thought. I would have to produce and sell 500 sets to recoup My cost's and I don't think I would break even at that. So to justifiy My shop time I would probly Have to sell them for 800.00 a set. See post GT Flares project for more details. Thanks

Mike (maf 914),
Did you have to pay any extra duties or fees from our customs department? That is my only fear when dealing with foreign companies. I am very curious and really want the flares ASAP. Thanks, Oh, if you would, email me directly @ djm914-6@mediaone.net
