Pertronix "Ignitor"
I would like find out what experiences any of you have had with the Pertronix "Ignitor", which is an electronic ignition system that replaces the points and condensor(?). The advantage of this system, as I understand, is not increased performance, but never having points to change or adjust. I have a '73 914 2.0L completely stock.

I have a '73 1.7l, and have had the pertronics in my car for about two years.
Although my car ran fine with the points, I seem to experience smoother idling, better starting, and a little quicker responses. But best of all - no points to adjust. I recommend Pertronics. |
I have a '73 914 and it's the best (!) upgrade to eliminate those #$%& points! Better idle, smoother response, and thank God for Pertronix!

I fitted one of these last june, along with aBosch blue coil. yes it did work fine,& best of all no more points adjusting.
However, later in the year I was offered a crane Cams HI6 ignition system (Itwas on special offer ) & I Fitted that using the Ignitor as the ignition trigger. Draw backs were that the blue coil would not work with this, & I had to change to an Accel yellow coil. Also the Rev counter would not work & required a converter, but Imust say that there does seem to to be a little more power & acceleration seems smoother. It may help that the car ( A 71 1.7) isalso fiited with a Bursh exhurst. Hope this helps . |
how is the install? any problem with tuneing or with vac advance?
|
I had problems with the unit inside impeding the advance. Had to do a little modification. Both vacuum units and centrifugal ones.
When I switched to carbs, I wasn't to happy with the Pertronix, then switched to the Crane unit. Was able to keep the Blue Coil in all cases. When it works, it is great, when it goes out, nothing. Points will degrade over time. Always keep a set of points with you on the road. Remember, you never, ever have a problem with your car down the street from your house. Only when you are 100 miles away and broke, with no ATM or parts store in sight. Murphy's Law #442. |
