I need help. I have a 76 2.0 engine. One head has a dropped seat, the seat started coming out but got lodged kind of cockeyed in the head. It didn't totally come out and destroy the piston and combustion chamber. I'm not sure what to do with the head, does anybody know if it is worth fixing, cost?
I want to rebuild the engine with euro pistons, bigger cam and go with carbs, but don't know what to do about the heads. Any ideas would be appreciated Thanks pete |

If it's a 2.0L (3 bolt intake) head, I'd have a reputable head shop weld it up, slap another seat in it and have the rest of them checked, then have them both rebuilt. 2.0L's are getting hard to come by (at least in the Midwest). I have two pair and plan to rebuild and rotate them about every 50K or so.

more power
I would rebuild the heads and get bigger valves in the process. Port polish, cc, the whole 9 yards.

Ditto what joe says. If the seat dropped and damaged the bore, you've got a load of work anyway.

Thanks for the responses, does anybody know how much this costs or a reputable shop?

Greg Aaronson at FAT told me that $1500 worth of headwork is not out of this world for a 'hot' T4. I may have $600 or $700 into mine with no regrets.
For benchmark pricing check FAT or RIMCO or Leitner and Bush in Toronto (pay in CDN$) www.fatperformance.com www.rimcovw.com www.leitnerbush.com Fat has a published price list that you can request that will give you an idea by operation of machining costs (top dollar IMHO), Rimco may have it on the WEB, L&B would have to be by tel or email. Jake Raby has recommended Headflowmasters in his video and elsewhere for head work. Make sure that if you use a non-T4 expert that they use higher than std. crush for the fit of the new seats - that is supposed to prevent fallen seats. (I can't remember the recommended spec) Down the slippery slope you slide!
