i have 2 10 inch subs in my front trunk, eash takes 200W rms
2 kicker resolution 4 inch midrange speakers in each stock position along side 2 ore kicker 1 1/4 inch tweeters tiilted to be aimed at my head. each midrange and tweeter takes 100W a piece.
so thats 800w total rms or 1600W peak power.

have 3 amps, 1 for the 2 10's and the other 2 amps are for the left and right chanel mids and tweeters. the amps are mounted in the front trunk on the wall in front of the gas tank. i ran dedicated 8 guage power wires from the battery, through the center tunnel to each amp and the cd player, a panasonic with remote control.
oh yeah, i have a 3 way 2 channel crossover in the front trunk as well.

it thunps so nice when im listening to my rock and roll. my sister awalys wants to borrow the car so she can drive around listening to rap usic using my 2 10's but i hate that music.
she just bought a 98 civic so ill probably install some 10 inchers in the trunk of her car.

Bell,
You mentioned volume vs. driver size and resonance in your previous post. Is there a way to calculate this stuff? Is lower resonance Hz better? Thanks to Rouser's center console post, I think I'll try fabbing a replacement center console, but would like to be able to figure the volume & resonance tradeoffs.

Thanks,
John

BeeJay, NICE CAR!!! How about some details; got any more pix?

the resonance frequency is where the speaker will perform the loudest, when you design an enclosure you can use a couple of different programs to do the calculations for you, me being in car audio gave me access to this and over the years of using it i'm pretty good at designing things right off of mfg specs.
the stronger the enclosure is will determine how defined the music will be, if the enclosure is too weak than building the box to mfg specs won't matter because it can't take advantage of the resonant freq.(if the enclosure flexes too much you lose the peak res.).
you can almost always go with the mfg specs for the box and come out with killer sound as long as the box it strong.
also......building the box to a specific freq. will let you get more bass for free. the interior of all cars has it's own peak freq, to find this freq you need an RTA and a reference speaker for testing before building (a proccess i can explain). when this is done spl is increased 2-3db sometimes more. sorry for the long post:)

Lot's of pictures of my car here: http://pelicanparts.com/swapmeet_pics/GermanAutoFest-01/Page3.htm
1973 914 1.7 converted to a 2.0 with Dellorto carbs, webcam, 9 to 1 CR, and ported heads. New paint, new interior, 5 lug conversion, sway bars and springs. I hope to convert it to a six when I can find a 3.0 or 3.2 engine. I already have oil tank, engine mount, engine tin (fiberglass). I need heat exchangers, throttle linkage, and flywheel. Hope to start this summer.

Bee Jay- That is one sweet looking (and I assume 'running') teen. You definitely have alot of time and 'Ben Franklins' put into your baby. Please take no offense, but your front trunk's WAY too pretty for those headlight motors.

I do have a question about your motor. Do you have your head vents capped off and just use the oiler filler vent? I'm putting the 2.0L (also carb'ed) back together for the first time, and was kind of worried about blowing oil all. Your's is so clean I figure you've got it right.

SummerSledSix 03-04-2002 05:23 AM

BeeJay, good luck finding your six, I just finished the same process (though my car is nowhere as pristine as yours). One suggestion when you do your heat exchanger shopping. Being up here in the northeast, heat is kind of a necessity, rust is a reality, so I sprung for the B&B S/S headers with heat, they looked like the "high end" solution. Think long and hard before you go to these, they are a major pain to put on, the tube routing was done without consideration for assembly, mine didn't fit well at all, the muffler does not sit level, and most of the air pressure from the blower leaks out of the seams, so I don't even know if the box volume provides adequate heat (they look small). They do look pretty, but for the price you'll pay, the workmanship is abysmal. Just my $0.02.

Thanks Special K and summer sled 6. I know, the headlight motors need to be covered or cleaned up. Everyone says the stock six heat exchangers are too restrictive for 3.0 liters, but I'm thinking, what will they hurt. So what if they choke off 15 to 25 horsepower, I'll still have double what I have now, with heat. So I'm leaning toward stock heat exchangers. Besides, those Stainless Steel heat exchangers are expensive. I started with a late 2.0 liter motor, which did not have the oil vents. I figured that I would drill vents into the valve covers if over pressure or blow bye became a problem, but so far, no problem.

Off Topic - Bee Jay's 6

Bee Jay, I am going to put in a 3.0 as well, but I will also keep my stock exchangers. You only loose a little on the high end, but you'll gain some low end grunt for what I hear. I'm also keeping my stock carbs to do the same.

Bee Jay 03-04-2002 08:47 AM

Off topic, now Bee Jay's six
Dave, don't let the concours weenies know you are changing your stock 914-6 to a 3.0 liter. They consider it blasphemy. What else have you heard about running stock heat exchangers? I can pick up a set for around $700, have them jet hot coated, and still be at half the cost of stainless steel aftermarket. But if I get more low end grunt out of the deal, too cool. I'm sold.
Bee Jay
Dave Darling, is there a way to move the last few posts to a new thread, or do I have to start one. I really would like to hear some more opinions on running stock heat exchangers with larger motors.

illco99 03-04-2002 10:00 AM

JL has the the specs on thier site, but those are just recomended specs. You can call them or a stereo shop that uses JL's and find the real air space needed.

Dave at Pelican Parts 03-05-2002 08:26 AM

Bee Jay, it doesn't look like there's a convenient way to move the posts to a new thread. Wayne might know how, but I can't find it. I can delete the posts, but I can't post them again under someone else's name.

My suggestion: Start a new thread. Quote from this one anything that you feel is relevant.
