Need advice on buying used Koni's
I have a lead on a full set of used Koni's. I have no plans on autox but would like a very nice handling street car. The price for the lot iis about $150. The description I have is as follows:
"The fronts are 82R 1730 and the rears are 82K 1722 both are Koni Special D made in Holland. If you look at the Koni site you want find these numbers as they have changed. They came off a 70 914 that was used on the street and autox. The fronts look new, the rears have surface rust and look dirty but are just fine. They both are adjustable by pushing down the piston and engaging the valve. They are very usable and are rebuildable by Koni or others." I got a few pics w/the description and they certainly look ok but looks are secondary to their intended function. But I don't know anything about the numbers and rebuilding these things. Any of you 914 braniacs have any advice/input? Thanks in advance, Pete

My .02.
I have a set of those rears that came with my car, and similar fronts that came with the 911 suspension that I am installing. Mine were in effect free, but I would think twice about buying a set unless the price is great and your budget is very lean, and/or you don't mind all the goofing around required to change the settings. Also, I spoke with Koni and they will rebuild them but it is cheaper to replace them - that rebuild service is intended for higher end stuff, so do check that the compression and rebound damping work properly and that the adjustment is effective - it will be very obvious if they don't work right. Later models have a remote adjustment that means you don't have to disassemble anything to adjust it, MUCH easier.
