Guys, got a 901 side shifter hooked up to a 3.2 six via a flywheel & clutch adapter from Patrick M/S. The tranny was rebuilt locally by a reputable 901 expert last summer and had seen <100 miles on the road when I noticed my brand new Swepco dripping out of the engine / tranny seam. Pulled the tranny, rebuilder replaced the main shaft seal, put every thing back together, put about another hundred miles on it.
Looks like it's doin it again. Any opinions on what could be causing this??? I'm getting pretty good at removing / replacing the drive train, but I'd like to spend my weekends *driving* it for awhile... Also getting an interesting noise in 4th and 5th, not quite a whine, just a slightly harsh sound, when I put the drivetrain under load, ie step on the gas a bit. Related? Or yet another project in the making??? Thanks in advance, this forum rocks!!!

Look for a groove in the input shaft where the seal rides. If it has one, it's tearing up the lip on the seal. You can try polishing it with very fine crocus cloth or in some cases a sleeve can be fitted over the area.
Or check your breather vent on the tranny for a clog. Internal pressure will "blow" the seal. Check for excessive input shaft wobble (bad / questionable bearing). Check pilot bearing in rear of crank. Just ideas! As for the 4th /5th gear "sound". I got nuthin'

Check the transmission housing where the seal sits.
Make sure the are no gouges or marks in this area. A previous removal of a seal could have damaged the hosing allowing oil to get by the outer part of the seal. If this is the case some emty cloth or Scothbrite pad to smooth it down.... or a liilte silicone sealer around the outside of the seal... ![]()
