Question Wiper Assembly Removal

I'm in the process of painting my car and tried to remove the wiper assembly. Have the gas tank, blower, shaft nuts etc. removed. Removed the nut behind the dash. Did not remove the motor from the assembly/bracket. The stud sticking through the cowl (where the nut was removed from under the dash) seems very long and won't allow me to pull the wiper assembly out without what appears to me EXCESSIVE force. The rubber mount flexes some but not enough to allow removal. I don't want to break anything and I can't imagine that it was under that much tension going in. Am I supposed to remove the rubber mount from the bracket? If so, how? Since it appears to be screwed into the bracket to a welded nut. Something isn't right. I shouldn't have to gouge the underside of the cowl to back the shafts out of the holes. Anyone have any hints? I don't know what the rubber mount is made like but I don't want to ruin it. Besides, reassembly would be just a difficult. Any help is appreciated.

Wow, I've had mine out. Along time ago now. I remember it being very tight. And I remember the vibration mount that has the nut on the inside of the car under the dash. I think I unbolted the supports for the wiper panel. I don't think I've been much help, but at lease my post will move your thread back to the top. Maybe someone else will look at it and remember the trick.

Rich-

I bet there aren't too many 914's in Duluth? Must be a blast to cruise on the "North Shore Drive" along Lake Superior. I'll have to do a road trip up there this summer!

Regards,
Tom

Yeah, that @#$% Flex joint!

I broke it off! Sheared in half.
I was in similar situation like you where (I just don't have the patient), I loosen the nut (use 10 mm socket) under dash side, but wouldn't come complete off (rusted, I guess?)

The nut on the "cowl" bracket side didn't seem like welded to the bracket (on my car).
So, I used 11 mm size open box wrench clamped rubber body with a vise-grip.
Anyway, that larger nut came loose, but the other end stayed on the "firewall".
So I tried to do the same using the vise grip holding the Rubber body and Bam! The rubber "flex" shaft broke in half, and I still have the 10 mm nut under the dash attached to the end of what's left of the rubber shaft.
I finally got the grip on what's left of the rubber part and got the 10 mm nut off.

Long story short, it was a item not meant to be taken off.
I'll be looking for some sort of rubber bushing with Alum hex (body) standoff with threaded shaft on both sides from McMasterCarr (somewhere around 1 inch to 1.25 " long "body")

So, my advice is try to remove the nut under dash if you can.
Spray some penetration oil on the threads and let it sit.
Or try similar thing I did, but with another person holding the vise grip (may be use sow paper towel or cloth wrap around the rubber shaft?)
Other wise leave that rubber shaft alone; you will break it just like I did, and I don't know if anon sell that item anywhere.
Help!
