engine type!

Anyone know if a 73 2.0-4 is considered a type iv engine?

All of the stock four-cylinder 914s were versions of the VW Type IV motor.

Other versions of that motor were used in the later (1972+) VW Buses, and the VW 411 and 412.

Anyone turbocharging the 2.0? What is the highest HP on a 2.0L?

Uh-oh, get ready for the "Everybody knows you can't turbo a 914" comments! (Long-standing joke in the 914 community, from an ill-informed magazine article years ago.)

You can pretty easily pull 200+ HP out of a 2.0 914 engine. All it takes is the willingness to write a really REALLY big check, and rebuild it often. Race-only versions of the 1.8 tend (in some race classes) put out more than 180 HP, so a similar treatment to the 2.0 motor should yield over 200 HP. But you would be rebuilding it after tens of hours of operation, and it would overheat and melt itself when stuck in traffic.

You can boost a stockish 2.0 motor and get something like 150 HP, at least for a little while. Requires high-octane fuel and some significant thought given to cooling. When you start getting further from stock, you can make more power and it will live longer.

There are people who are building ~2300cc motors for 914s that are making 200 HP with good torque. They "ought" to last a good while, but I'm not sure how many people have put lots of miles on them yet. Bring lots of money if you want someone to build you one of those.

Of course, you can design and build one of your own. It will cost a lot less to do each time, but there is definitely a learning curve so you may wind up building it several times over to get results you like. Which can be rewarding itself.

There is a whole other world when it comes to type IV performance. These engines have been explored and are being expoited to the point where they are now super reliable and uber powerful. One name that stands out in the T4 arena is Jake Raby of Aircooled Technology.

A really long thread on a type IV forum that has video and lots of pictures during the building as Wallys turbo type IV comes into it's own. He regularly street drives and races it at considerably higher than you might expect HP levels.

Another type 4 turbo: 2,2 ltr. Dyno results "103x66 (2200cc) T4T, 418 hp @ 19 psi"

Wally shows his successes and failures in that thread.

However, like Dave says this is not going to be inexpensive but the results are fantastic.
