help please - conversion options for mating a 3.2 to a 901 trans

this seems much more common in the 914 world than in the 911 end of things so I'm trying here. I'm putting a 3.2 in a '67 912. mating to a 4 speed 901 box.

it looks like I have a few options.

a Kennedy Engineering conversion flywheel with a stock/sport 215mm pressure plate and clutch.

or

a Kennedy Engineering conversion flywheel with their 228mm pressure plate and a 228mm clutch disc.

or

a Patrick Motorsports pressure plate with a 228mm ( vanagon I think ) clutch disc and using the stock 9 bolt 3.2 flywheel.

any opinions or experience with any of the above. any input MUCH appreciated. thanks, Don.

I have a stock 993 flywheel (sans a few pounds) on my 3.6L and i used a Kennedy Stage-2 clutch and pressure plate and a ring-gear adapter to mate it all to my stock 901.
I did have to notch the 901 for the flywheel sensor.

Works quite well ...

SirAndy,

Does that 901 behind the 3.6 live on the street or track? I ask because I am trying to finish a 3.1 to mate with a 901 and am worried about survival it is a track car on big radial tires.

Mostly street with the occasional AX and DE (on 9" GoodYear racing slicks).
I would not recommend the 901 for a dedicated race car as you have to be somewhat careful.

I don't use 1st gear at all anymore as it is the weakest link in the 901.
Luckily, i have enough torque so taking off in 2nd is no problem at all. I can lay down 30 feet of rubber taking off in 2nd. :D

I do have a fresh 915 box that i was planning on using when the 901 blows up. So far, it's been 4 years or so and it's still shifting nicely.

I've had the 915 in front of my 3.0 for a couple of years now. I've done all the linkage/adjustment tricks and it still shifts like cr*p. at least, when I'm drag racing. normal day-to-day is OK. with the 3.2 I'm going to the 4 speed 901 box. this makes for a better shifting trans and the 4 speed eliminates the weak first gear. first in the four box is the same ratio as first in the five, and fourth is the same as fifth. the middle two gears split the three used in the five speed. my engine has gobs of torque so I don't think I'll miss the extra gear. and it'll eliminate one shift while dragging. the slow 915 shifts were killing me. funny, every fall I say won't go dragging the next year, but........... come spring, there I am

slipping clutch with kennedy 2

Hi,
my experience is as follows:
I builded a 3.0L 180HP from a 911SC 1978 in my 914. I cut off the pinion gear from my 4-cyl flywheel and bolted it on the flywheel of the 3.0L motor. The hight of the pinion gear has been kept as original (0.885 inch if I remember well). Using a Kennedy pressure stage 2 plate (215mm), I still get a slipping clutch (new) at high revs. Probably the torque is too high for the small diameter clutch? A solution might be to lower the height of the pinion gear, so the clutch will be under higher pressure. Is this possible and will this solve / reduce the slipping problem? If so, how much could the pinion be lowered? 1mm, or more?

Thanks,
Gerber van der Graaf

I recently bought a 3.2 engine, and a 901 clutch conversion "kit"

- The clutch kit consists of these parts: Sachs 0251 410 31K 228mm disc, Sachs 3151 132 132 T.O. brg, KEP (Kennedy) Stage 1 Pressure Plate, Porsche 901 102 033 01 Flywheel, + Ring gear extension (no part no.)

Now that you know the numbers, I suspect you can get all this stuff right here from PelicanParts

- or you can haunt the swap meets next spring
