Seat recovering
From the "Credit where credit is due" dept.
A fellow 914 wonk recovered my seats.....actually, just the center sections. I told him I wanted cloth and a decent color match. The rest was in his hands. I also wanted a thinner butt pad for the AX wars. The results.....uh, oh....pic posting is screwed up again. Maybe later

Nice work, JP! I had a buddy redo my seats in a similar fashion--cloth for the inserts. The sides and headrest, however, were changed to leather.
The back of the seat wasleft vinyl, because you can't see it against the backpad anyway.BTW, smilies do work--click on them to put one in your note. Or you can type them in--without the "nose". --DD

Now the seats won't get so dang hot in the sun!!! I was always wondering about getting some of those Renegade Hybrids seats...does anyone know if they could do those in leather w/ alcatera inserts? I think that'd be nice.
That roll bar would look nice w/ some covers on it, I'm sure you'll post pics when/if that is done. Now the important thing...what are the details on your brakes, they look great!!! Nathan

Your basic 911 set-up with S front calipers and M rears.
Got a decent deal on used, drilled rears....worn but servicable along with the M calipers. A good deal on new front rotors. The stock rear calipers weren't getting along with the S fronts, so I had to do somethin'. I really didn't plan to use drilled rotors, but what the hell........ No ebrake, BTW.

JP, How do you jack your car up high enough to place it on your "castors"? Do you do it in stages with jack stands?
BTW, nice looking brakes! Thanks, Mike |

I do it in stages, with a floor jack, using short lengths of 2 X 12 for blocking. I have a deep mistrust of jack stands as I can't seem to find a good place to put them under a 914. The point of contact
on the doughnuts is so small that it is worrysome (to me). I need 33 inches under the rear bumper (valence off) to get the motor out. It takes 3 lifts to get there. The first is about 10 inches, using hay (wood blocks), the next to about 16 inches using the castor boxes on their sides, the last is to the height in the pics( bout 24 inches). I have a new tool from Harbor Freight to support the motor and a pic, natch

JP-
What's your construction technique for the boxes with casters. I'm thinking there is an internal frame work?? Great idea, Thanks, Tom

Ayup, internal braces in an X formation. 2 peices of 3/4 ply each with a 3/4 in slot halfway thru so they slide over each other. Glued and screwed to the sides (8 places). The 4 verticle corners have 2X2s inside, 3/4 ply sides. About 15 3/4 in squares.......gotta use all that 4X8 sheet of plywood.....3 sheets, as I recall, with some left over.
The casters are from Harbor Freight, rated at 375lbs load each(as I recall), about 5 bucks a pop. Their not light....prolly 30-35 lbs each.

JP,
Nice looking seats. My current 914 have the same - much better in this heat than the all vinyl of my previous 914. The motor support tool from Harbor Freight - it looks like it can reduce low enough to receive the engine/tranny during engine drop (as would my furniture cart) - agreed? If so, can you get me some info on where to contact them? Thanks,

3D914,
Its http://www.harborfreight.com keyword "lift" HINT: Wait for the "free shipping" catalog. Beware...they will send you catalogs till the end of time..... I have the high lift cart for the beast..its close to this one... http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=41189 I flipped the handle around so it goes flat under the car. I was great for getting the engine and crate out of the truck ![]() -Rich Hilgersom Last edited by Rich Hilgersom; 04-03-2002 at 09:27 AM.. |

JP,
Can you get me a set of plans for those boxes? I"ll even take some measured pencil sketches if that's all you have and will convert to a CAD drawing myself (gotta have some fun at work). I love the motor lift too and the seats look comfy. I'll need to do something for seats soon. TIA,

Gee, Dave, you think I had a plan?......
It was one of my typical wood working projects which primairly consist of taking a few big peices of wood and making a bunch of little peices......and saw dust, of course. No one is more surprised than I when something useful pops out the far end of one of these sessions. All the calcumulations were done on one of the pieces of wood (god knows where that ended up).....but.....I guess I could go measure and reverse engineer them....then make a sketch at work. ![]() 3D914: Yes, it's height (compressed) is about 4 inches. I had to build it up bout 3 inches to meet the bottom of my engine cradle thingy. HF calls it an ATV lift.......but what do they know. 14 1/2 inches of lift. Bout 150 bucks.

I'm assuming this is the same unit: ATV Lift
With a little jigging, it looks like this would be great for up-downing 914 powertrains in a snap. "Hello ... Harbor Freight Tools? 1 each please ..."

Thanks for the info. I found the site and will get back to them soon to order. No more crawling on the floor to work on the engine while its sitting on the furniture cart. I wonder if my boss want that cart back?
Since we're on the subjects of lifts - I have seen many 6000# automotive lifts but this is overkill (not to mention over-engineering) for the 914. Have any of you found/seen a decent floor lift suitable for the 914's under 3000# weight? Many thanks,
