Gear flip

Someone else ask this question a couple of years ago but I never saw it answered. Supposedly you can flip 5th and 3rd gears and install a new 4th gearset to make a closer ratio box for road racing. However, I noticed it would make 3rd and 5th run in reverse mesh. Does anyone have any experience with this and if it caused any problems? Also, does any of the VW transaxle gear sets( GEM, FTC) fit a 914 shaft? Anyone have any used gearsets for sale (not stock ratios) email me with what you have?

Yes, it can be done. I know several people who are running close-ratio boxes in race-prepped 914s. Note that 2nd gear is a part of the mainshaft so you cannot change it, you can only change 1, 3, 4, 5.

I am pretty sure that the VW gearsets do not fit. Not certain, but pretty sure. But lots of gearsets were available for Porsche's 901 gearbox over the years, and they all work in ours. Paul Guard at Guard Transmission is the transmission guru, particularly for racing boxes. gears@gte.net Note that the best does not usually come real cheap.
