Looking for a 914 that is completely done
I have been looking for a 914 for a long time now. I had a 74 2.0 in high school 20 years ago and want to find another one. It was one of the most fun cars I have ever owned. I know all about where they like to rust and why. I ideally want onr thats completely restored, tub dipped and concours. Tasteful mods are ok. Yellow, orange, silver, black? Even a 6 conversion. If you know of one, or have one you are thinking of selling please let me know. I have cash on hand, and live in NY.
Are any of these around? Seems like so many are butchered or bandaid repaired and not the right car. Please share your thoughts. |
What's your budget?
|
Believe me, they are out there. You just have to search religiously and be ready to spring when you find it. Happy hunting.

Look here: 914World.com - A Porsche 914 Community / Forum / Club
and maybe at this one: 914World.com - A Porsche 914 Community / Forum / Club Edit: You may want to place a WTB in Panorama if you are looking for a top flight car. |
Some good ideas. As for budget I am very open. I will pay what is fair and reasonable. If its the clone 74 2.0 yellow like i had I will pay more than I probably should. Would you say 10k-15k should find a great one?

and as my signature states, I would buy the right 911 also.

$15k will get you a very nice, original car. $20k+ will get you a low mileage concourse winner. As always, you really need to do your homework since there a quite a few cars out there that pretend to be what they are not. A lot of "original" cars are sold these days with many not so original or mixed-matched parts. Check out Jeff Bowlsby's archive of all things original plus some: http://bowlsby.net/914/Classic/ http://bowlsby.net/914/CanAm/ http://bowlsby.net/914/WiringHarnesses/ http://bowlsby.net/914/PartsFS/ Good luck! +1 what SirAndy said!

Does it have to be a 2.0L? How about a nice yellow 1.8L.
|
sixbanger.. do you have any pics you can send me or post. Any rust? all original?
|
I'm in the process of replacing the floors & doing some rust repair in a -4. This is in no way a proper restoration. Until I started buying the sheetmetal, I'd been wondering why I couldn't find a lot of restoration threads on the forums that showed how all of the panels get sandwiched together. Anyway, the replacement floorpans & panels for my 914 have cost more than 2x what another tub would have so far. Unless it's a -6, you would really have to have a personal reason to restore one of these cars. There is no way it's worth it money wise, IMO.

samba has cars too; pca, pca local regions, CL, here, 914 world/club as well.
That said, it seems to me most of the really, really nice 914s still sell best by word of mouth. Check you local regions. I found a beautiful '76 2.0 a few years back in NJ, mostly by word of mouth. imho, finding a nice northeast car carries a small price premium due to scarcity. That premium may or may not be the value of transporting a nice car in from somewhere far away. Sounds like you are chasing a memory, and that can be hard to achieve. if its been years since you've had a 914, you might try finding some local "less nice" ones to remind you of the how they actually drive. I too would like to find a car like the one you describe, but considering the 914 price points for the last 20 years, abuse, neglect, time, have all played harsh roles in their condition. If you are open to a 6 conversion, then also consider a big bore 4 imho. It doesn't seem like you are requiring complete originality, just truly rust and "issue" free. You might even consider a 1.7 if one comes along.. and maybe find your own 2.0 to drop in if you think the extra 15hp matters... which it might not if just being used for sunday morning coffee runs. |
You might talk to the folks over at Tangerine Racing in CT. Chris and Ed are great guys (I haven't met Chris in person yet, but have dealt with him on the BBSes a lot; I have met Ed several times in person) and should steer you right. They may also be able to help you with test driving a 914 to see how it matches your memory. I know that Ed had a very original 76 914 a number of years back, even down to the 165-width tires, and it was a real reminder of how the 914 originally drove.

I have been thinking and should also clarify. I want a rust free original tub or a restored car, but modifications are ok. No body kits, or non- oem paint colors. Suspension mods, motor transplants to a 6, steel flares, wider rims are all very cool with me. I guess when I say original, I mean no aftermarket bolt on wings, red interiors, chevy 350 powered, or anything in that general vicinity. |
Send me your e-mail address.

send me your email also

Ken, PM me your contact information. I have a 2 owner '74 2.0 that I am ready to part with but haven't yet advertised. I've owned the car for 16 years but its time to make room in the garage to work on the original -6 I bought a couple of years ago. The car is not perfect but has been well cared for and is in great shape cosmetically and mechanically (even won its class at the 2006 PCNA Parade autocross).

I have a 1976 2.0 that is pretty clean and original but not perfect.. I am the third owner. It has the original fuel injection. It is driven daily, garage kept both at home and work. It has been a very reliable car.
