Overflow hose

The overflow hose for the gasoline filler is missing on my car. Looking down below the tank I can barely see daylight, indicating this is where the excess gasoline would be dumped. But the opening I can see does not seem to be large enough for the overflow hose to go through it. Am I correct in assuming the hose simply droops over the metal area leading to the hole, allowing any excess gasoline to flow down the sides of the metal and through the hose? Or is it possible to force the hose through the hole?

On my car the overflow hose is a large-ish (1/2"? 3/4"?) vinyl hose. Not sure if it's stock or not. Anyway, it goes from the filler neck area all the way down to the bottom of the car. It pokes out of the car's body through a hole that is the same size as the hose, and is near the large hole where you get access to the bottom of the fuel tank.

I hope that makes sense, it's a little early at the moment...

Oh--Haynes has a picture. There's one in the Front Suspension section, Fig. 7.10 in my book (Steering Rack picture). The hose is on the left edge of the photo. And I *think* the "2.2c" photo in the Bodywork section is the same hose, but it doesn't quite look right somehow...

There is also a picture of the hole in the body the hose either attaches to or goes through in the Pelican Parts techinical section - "Replacing 914 Gas Lines In The Center Tunnel" - Figure 3. It is the small hole with no hose attached to it. I hope this helps.

Thanks Dave and Keith. As I'd said, I can see light way down there but it just doesn't look like a large enough hole. Dave, you've got a keen eye. I spotted the hose in the picture after reading your reply. Looks like I might have to get under the car and run a wire up that hole.. then I could spot it from the top. Yes, the hose appears to be 3/4" so I had assumed a large hole at bottom would be viewed from the top. Perhaps I'm looking at the wrong hole as there are either lines or hoses running through the hole I see. I'm on the right track.. Thanks again Guys!
