Driver's Ed
Yesterday I attended the Evolution Performance Driving School. It was awesome. My 914 did great. The only anomaly for the day is when she "ate" two of the air cleaner socks. The instructor got me to take the slamom flat out so I was hitting the MSD 6k rpm rev limiter. I do not do that too often as I usually shift around 5k at the most. Well, there was not enough time to upshift so I just kept my foot in it and I guess at one point the motor ingested them. I took the carb and intake off today but could not see any sign of the sock. I assume it is burned up or maybe I will find it at the next rebuild but it was definitely not in the intake tract. It really made no difference to the motor as I only found out at the end of the day when I popped the cover to cool the engine before the drive home.
Anyway, I would recommend this school and experience to anyone!!! I ended up taking 41 runs. That is like the equivalent of 11 months of autocrosses. The seat time was awesome. The instructors really knew their stuff too!!! I wish I could have gone to the Phase 2 also, but we will save that for another time. I ended up knocking 2 seconds off my morning runs!!! I think this is really going to help at next month's event!!! It is pretty hard on tires and I would not use race tires as they would surely get worn out. My "street" tires wore very well but they still got a lot of wear. The tread is picking and they a definite roughness about the whole tread. Regardless of all that...is was an awesome experience. I wish there were more 914 guys autocrossing. I am always the only one out there. Any Central Florida guys want to come out to an Autox event let me know and I will point you to the clubs website!!!

Can anyone suggest a driving school located in the San Diego area? I'm interested in taking a class.

Try to email Jean Kinser. She runs the Evolution school and might be willing to set one up there if you can get the interest.
jkinser77@aol.com I looked through the PCA online calender and could not find anything about California events. That is hard to believe though as CA is like the most popular place for Porsche's.

PCA San Diego hold a very comprehensive 3 day school twice a year and it is very tough to get into since there are usually double the number of entries for the number of places. In SD that is it and this is mainly due to not having a dedicated race facility. About the closest is either the DD school in Las Vegas or BB in Phoenix and both offer programs to get you completely SCCA competition license certified. This about the toughest license to get and the schools are not cheap. An alternative is the SCCA driver's ed sessions that are run at Holtville and I hear that the differences between the airstrip management and the county has been resolved so they might be running races/training sessions there again. My daughter did a couple of them when she was 17 and they were good. Try calling Dave Turner's as he is up on what they are doing. Good luck.
