timing mark

Ok a quick question on the timing mark.... I looked in a few books and the pelican site.....and maybe I am missing something....there is TDC, 5 degree, and 27 degree mark in the repair book on the car I found one cut mark with a little red paint...Is this the TDC or 27 degree??
any extra direction with timing and tunning would be helpful :-)..seems a little rough on the idle??
thanks again ,
Rich

Unless someone has touched up the original marks and added their own color scheme, I believe that red is the 27 degree mark. White is TDC and black is 5 degrees BTC, at least on a 1.7.

A number of things can cause the rough idle but make sure that you have the dwell properly set (44-50 degrees IIRCC) prior to setting the timing. You might find a Haynes manual helpful.

The 29 degree mark at 3500 RPM spot is the left side of the fat web on the fan. You can see a faint raised oval cast mark that's it.
Oh this is for carbs. but the timing mark is the same.

Check in "914 Tech Articles" elsewhere on this website. You'll find pics of the timing marks and where they are in relation to the fan blades in the 914 Timing article.
