3.0 SC into a 914 can anyone help

Hello everyone, I just bought a '83 3.0 SC ($2500 running complete, I'm happy) and now I am going to install this into my 73 914. I have highly reasearched the whole 914-6 conversions and I know early Porsches very well. I bought a 2.7 and had it rebuilt then decided what the hell I am going to buy this 3.0 (2.7 is for sale). I bought the engine with all CIS, shrouding, exhaust still on it (it was started and run in front of me prior to removal).Engine also has: turbo valve covers, pressure fed tensioners, pop of valve.
My question is what do I need to hook this up to my 73 914 electrics, fuel system etc? I know I need a matched fuel pump (anyone have one for sale?) do these need a line to and from the fuel tank?, I guess I need a brain (what do these go for?? anyone got one?), do SC engines use the 6 pin CD box?? I have a 3 pin but I guess it won't work. Will I need the relay board out of an SC? (if so what do these cost? anyone got one?). Will I need the O2 sensor? What else do I need to consider to hook up all elelectrical and fuel components of this engine?
I have a pair of Weber 40 IDAs I plan on installing in the future, I was thinking it may just be easier to leave the engine together and run the CIS for now. Does anyone know what jets and venturis to run with a 3.0SC maybe F3 tubes? anything else needed?

I will also need 914-6 headers. What size should I run? 1 3/4" 1 5/8" ? Does anyone know the value of a complete used 3.0 '83 exhaust (california if it makes a diff). Whats the value of the complete 3.0 SC CIS injection system?

Where can I get a 9 bolt 3.0 flywheel that will fit in a stock 901 914 transmission? How much? (I just sold a used one to somebody about a month ago arrrg)

I have a NOS 914-6 oil tank, fiberglass sheetmetal, engine mount. I saw someone at a show that had a oil cooler adaptor inbetween his oil filter and tank. Would this be a feasable means to add an oil cooler? Can I mount the oil cooler under the passenger rear fender?

how much are you selling the 2.7 for and what all do you have for it to make it drive?i have a 74 1.8 and i want speed,that's just not doing it for me

Try try this guy, he is doing the same thing as you. Its almost done. We are doing the engine swap next week-end. Hell probably have all the answers to your questions apart the CIS. Hes fitting Webers. Shouldnt you?

More on this

I have the 2.7 on the Rennlist under their classified adds, I want $3000 about the dollar amount I have into it not including all my time.

Everyone say use the webers don't bother with the CIS, I can agree on that but..... I am 25yrs old and have the time to pull the motor again, I have a small shop that I run myself building 912 engines and selling parts all day so I do have more time than some and can do my own work so I do not have to pay to switch anything. My webers are typical the y could use throttle bushings and need to be re-jetted for the 3.0. Who can do this for me at a reasonable price??? So far I think $600 is a bit much for that. Anyone have and Weber manifolds, mine melted in the solvent tank. I don't mind hooking up the CIS if I can get it to run cheaply (I'm not afraid of using junkyard parts, I can always fix it later). Maybe it is just better to go with carbs. Too bad I can't get a gov't grant.

Anyway as usual this is a tough job to get one of these things in a 914.

Confused, you might try Patrickmotorsports for your flywheel and header needs. Not sure whether Pelican offers such parts. For any "previously owned" parts you need, I'd suggest PartsHeaven in Hayward, CA. Talk with Alan.

I'd recommend using one of the great guys at Pelican. For a new visiter, the website catalog can be a little confusing. A toll free call, an you will get all of the parts you need as well as some good advice. I may be using Patrick for some items, but Pelican will be my first choice for most everything on my 914/6 to GT conversion.

Having done the 3.0 conversion, there is a bunch of stuff to be done .

Your questions are good. I will try to answer them for you.

1st, fitting an SC CIS motor into a 914 is not easy w/o cutting the trunk. You will need to move the engine lid catch to the other side of the car. Also, IMHO, you will need to use the Rich Johnson Bulk head mount (from Pelican) Also, the biggest pain in the conversion process is the plumping (gas or oil). Oh, and you will need an external oil cooler. It will take about another 5K to finish the project "correctly".

Ok, here we go
Q1. My question is what do I need to hook this up to my 73 914 electrics, fuel system etc?
A1. SC fuel pump under the gas tank using SS lines with AN fitting from racingpartswholesale.com. Also, replace the plastic lines with Alum lines with AN fittings on each end.

Q2, I guess I need a brain (what do these go for?? anyone got one?), do SC engines use the 6 pin CD box??
A2. You will need an SC brain an assoc wiring. Check the 911 BBS for the parts. Another thought, buy a Carrera 3.2 FI system. Much easier to fit into the car and more reliable

Q3. Will I need the relay board out of an SC?
A3. Nope, just patch into the 914 relay board.

Q4. Will I need the O2 sensor?
A4. Only if you want to…. If it is mostly a street car, yes, track car no.

Q5. What else do I need to consider to hook up all electrical and fuel components of this engine
A5. Look at a 914 and 911 Haynes Manual and figure out what goes to what. Extend the 911 wiring harness, rearrange the pins to mate the 911 plug to the 914 T-12 connector on the relay board

Q6. Carbs
A6. Only know FI

Q7. 914-6 headers. What size should I run? 1 3/4" 1 5/8" ?
A7. Good question. Street or track car?

Q8. I have a NOS 914-6 oil tank, fiberglass sheet metal, engine mount.
A8. Tank is good, fiberglass in not recommended IMHO, Rich Johnson’s mount is the one to use

Q9. Oil cooler.
A9. Oil cooler should be up front to get air. Use AN 12 (3/4”) lines as a min. Use a Mocal thermostat and an oil cooler with min AN 12 fittings. Take the pressure line from the motor. Where it turns 90 degrees, cut it off and weld on a AN 90 degree fitting that goes the other way (towards the 914s passenger side. Run the pressure line behind the right rocker panel. Run the return behind the drivers rocker panel.

Hi there,

Answering some questions.

Yes the CD for a 3.0L is a 6pin unit. Other alternative is to go with a MSD unit.

For the flywheel, KEP (Kennedy Engineering Products) can make you one if you provide a core unit (914) for around 200.00.

I'm going with webers on mine. If you get your stuff from PMO they will know what you need or pretty close to it. Get Bruce Anderson's Performance handbook, alot of info is in there.

As for headers, i'll be running the stock 914-6 heat exchangers. Got a reply from B.A. and told me that they dynoed this setup (3.0L, Webers, 914-6 heat exchangers) a while back and got some 210hp out of it.

Going with webers will simplify the electrical part. Just plumb it into the 12pin connector on the relay board. I'll be using an alternator with an internal voltage regulator and i'll be able to ditch the relay board (will be using a 14pin male connector to go into the main wiring harness).

If you use the stock CIS, you will need the O2 sensor.

This car is going to be a street car. So what size headers should I use? I think I will go with the webers to save buying a fuel pump and brain. Can anyone recomend a shop in Southern California that can install new throttle shafts in my webers and re-jet them??

Thanks for the KEP tip, I already contacted them, now I need a stock 914 flywheel for a core, anyone have one cheep?
