Transmission imput shaft bearing

I am rebuild a transmission for my race car. The bearing for the input shaft has a bronze bearing retainer. One side of the double race bearing fell out when I removed the input shaft and some of the bearing won't stay in the retainer. Is this bearing shot? I also took another trans apart and found the same bearing with a steel retainer. Is this a better design than the bronze style? All the steel balls are in good condition and shiny. Thanks

IMHO that bearing should be replaced with a steel-caged version. I've replaced them in the past with both and had very few problems, but the steel ones are more reliable.
