Power Windows

I'm wanting power windows in my '72. But haven't thought though all the hidden hitches yet. The current questions I have are: Should I use the early style windows, with channel in the center mechanism or get the later style windows with the scissor style mechanism. I'll make a custom door panel mount for the p/w switches similar to the 944 door panel. For I am also looking @ going to power mirrors. So switch location should not be a problem. Any advice or comments would be appreciated. Thanks

I installed power windows in one of my BMW 2002's. I needed to find a lift that would allow alot of travel, as the 2002 has a tall green house. I adapted power window lifts from a 1984 Olds Cutlass Ceira. Any GM lift from the same era should work. The salvage yards are full of them. They are similar in design to the early style 914 lift. They have an adjustable plastic track. I needed to reshape the guide tube for a straight lift instead of the arc type glass of the Olds but It was no real big deal. Good luck.

I have heard that the autoloc units work with early and late units.

That Atlanta Co catalog has a power window kit that replaces the lifter entirely. Disclaimer: That does not say it actually exists or works. It looks like a bug unit to me.

I have not seen any catastrophic failure in the early units so I can not come up with a reason not to use them. (Disclaimer: I updated mine, but the reason was the door not the cranking unit).

I would call autoloc to see if they make a specific kit for the 914.

I called AA about their power window unit awhile back and they said that it would work with a 914.

Check around...I have seen the same kit for about $90 cheaper then there sale price.

I was also told the kit doesn't work with the 914 without alot mods. The kit mounts between the door panel and door. As you know there isn't much space between them.

Cool

I know it's an old post but I've been throwing around the idea of installing power windows, and was wondering if anyone has installed them successfully and could worn of what to look out for.
