Alternator belt intallation

I chucked a ALT belt off my 76 2.0 . I purchased a belt from pelican AVX10X965. I loosened the alternator and moved it up to install the belt ,but its too tight to go on. I have the alt as far over as it will go. its on the fan correctly . Am i missing something here?Is this the right belt? thanks for your help Simon

Well, how much smaller is it than the one you took off? Many times you will find the belt will need to be put on one or other pulley and then you start the belt over the other. You can either turn the engine by hand or jog it with the starter. Be sure to PULL THE COIL WIRE if you try the starter method.

Alt belt

I got it on . I thought I had the alt moved as far as it would go . There was another 1/4 inch left to move it. thats all it needed
