914 apart; need thoughts on $

My first post in this section. Had this up in the classified discussion area but no bites so figured I'd give it go here. Like to know the general consensus before I commit to $ number. The guy interested is great to deal with and we have good history (he's purchased from me before) so I want to be fair. Here's the post:

I began turning this car into a mild track car I could drive on the street once in a while and use in club events. I'm disinterested in finishing it as another track car has taken its place and someone is interested in buying so I'm in a good position in that regard. Putting a value to this is difficult as I'm in the atypical situation of having a fair amount invested but that car still is what it is regardless of what I have in it. Need some feedback on a fair value...not trying to eek out the last dollar by any means but something fair is what I'm after.

The car:
Orig CA 2.0 ('74 small bumper / no smog) with no accidents. Orig Porsche comp orange with one repaint somewhere in its life. I disassembled the entire car...down to the raw shell. Replaced drivers floor and trunk floor...they had very minor rust which not through the metal but since it was apart and I wanted it totally sound so I just replaced them. Car is / was very straight and now sits blocked ready for primer but engine bay still needs to be sanded clean (wiring is in place). Filled the side marker light holes. My orig intention was to have the car totally bare with glass bumpers, cage tied into towers and door bars, Stack cluster, a new Recaro (which I have) and zero interior.

All new suspension is fitted; the typical good stuff: adj Konis, springs, anti roll bars (pass through areas strengthened). Upgraded brakes in front.

Very nice mechanicals: New 170hp motor (assembled, dyno proven) set up for Webers. Everything balanced. Comp heads, upgraded valve train, Euro pistons, APR on everything, nice crank etc. Only thing I didn't do was move to Carillo rods as it wasn't needed for what I was after. Nice stock gearbox.

Have retained all stock parts incl wheels and injection system and all tins. Have new short shift kit, new clutch/ pressure plate / flywheel, all new masters, cables, brake lines etc.

Problem areas: Well, needs paint and total assembly obviously and the dash pad is toast. Some of the exterior metal trim will need some light straightening and re-plating. All padding and sound deadening has been removed. Will need new rubber seals and seals for targa top...top is good though.

I'm in the build $13,XXX for mechanicals, machining, suspension parts, and labor (with receipts of course). Cost of car was an additional $3100 about 9-10 years ago. Seat was another $1400.
So, any ideas? Thx!

Pennies on the dollar, sad to say. You can probably make more money parting it.

If you're in a rust-prone area, the de-rusted shell bumps up the value. In an area where low-rust cars are not that rare, I'd take a flying guess at $5K for the package. (And I'd be ready to take a flying leap if a seller told me to.)

Take a look over in the classifieds section here and on 914world to see what similar project cars have gone for. You'll probably find the answer is not pretty. :(

A running car would be worth more, but of course that takes time and effort (and some $$) to do.

Dave is right...you'll make more parting out...just takes more effort selling all the parts...the selling prices are much less than you paid for them and are what ever the market will bare unless it is some real 914-6 GT uber rare part....
Kind of depends how much time you have to sell all the parts...if someone wants to give you a reasonable price for all the boxes of parts and the shell and you feel good about the price...may just be easier that way....
Good Luck!

You guys have hit the nail on the head. Worth too little apart, and too time consuming to part out. We agreed last night it would sell for $5500...we are both satisfied. In the future, maybe he will let me take a few laps in it! Thanks to you both for the feedback.

You're very welcome...
glad it worked out for both of you...nothing like a good feeling by both parties on the sale...
