Ignitor II
Well I am sorry to say that I located the fault and it was in the Pertronix Ignitor. I spoke with them today and they gave me an address to send it back to for warranty. I asked about the Ignitor II and the guy said it is a pretty cool little toy. I asked if I could upgrade and he said no problem for a few more dollars. We will see what happens. I sent it out Fed Ex today so we will se how long it takes them to respond. Has anyone had any experience with the Ignitor II? I hope it will play nice with my 6AL.

I had an Ignitor II on a hot 1915 type I engine. I also had an Ignitor on the same engine. The II seemed to work a little better. As I recall it was better when the car was cold. I also had the Flamethrower coil on this setup. No MSD however. I wouldn't rush out and replace a good Ignitor with the II, but I would take advantage of the deal you got.
My friend burned up an Ignitor II on his VW Thing. I try to always carry points and condensor just in case of failure. |

Has anyone figured out why these thigns burn up??? It does not seem like the hardest thing in the world to do...actually, it seems pretty simple. Especially when the guy tells me it has to have +8V to even begin to operate. Its not like this thing is drawing juice and buring itself up. It has to be user interface...remember, I just burned up a "1" so I am wondering if I should be blaming myself??? Probably not though

Pertronix does not make an IGNITOR II for our Dizzy's. They do offer one for the 009 dizzy though.

I had the II in a 009. I have used a Ignitor 1 from a 009 in a djet dist. The gap seemed fat, but it works.

This is not the first posting that covers defects of Ignitors.
At least for the carburated 914 (like DPS Turtle's 914) there is an alternative... ... I was wondering for a while why noboby is trying to use the original Bosch stuff that is easily available from a variety of VW from the 80's. They have all the good stuff... Hall sender, Transistor based ignition (TZS), spare part availability through dealer network and the local junk yards. This will be my next project for my 914. The wiring harness is finished, and a suitable dizzy with hall sender and vacuum can is in the mail. Patrick

They called me back to tell me I had a bad hall effect sensor. Then he spent 30 minutes explaining to me that if I put a 3 ohm resistor inline the Ignitor would have less chance of overheating. When I asked him how to hook that up to my MSD he said...oops, the CDI ignition does not need that mod. He thought I said I only had an MSD coil. It seems that with the MSD no high voltage ever passes through the Ignitor, it is just used as a trigger (makes sense now why points last longer). He proceeded to tell me that the Ignitor II would offer no advantage even if it did come in our size dizzy. He also had no explanation whatsoever as to why the Ignitor burned up in the first place. Oh well, he says a new one is on its way.
